I feel like I keep seeing the two star-crossed lovers doomed to repeat their near romance again and again. While this story doesn't breath fresh life into that idea, the characters are compelling and the setting is interesting. It took a while for me to really feel hooked by the story because there seems to be a lot of story set up for the first quarter of the book. But then I found myself very interested in the doomed lovers and all of the quirky seondary characters. I did feel like the reader would benefit from a more fleshed-out explanation of the reason why Luce and Daniel can't be together, and there were a few places in the exciting end scenes where I felt cheated because Luce was never in any real danger and most of the drama happens off-page. However, it's a solid start to what could be a very interesting series, and I think the sequel deserves to be read to give the author a chance to flesh out the world building and really dig into the story.

The story starts out with Luce being late for the tour of the new boarding school she is attending, Sword & Cross. You're introduced to a few of the characters that become a big part of the story, such as Gabbe, Cam, and Arriane. Instantly, Cam takes a liking to Luce and so does Arriane, volunteering to show her around the grounds then demanding that Luce cut her hair like her own. Soon after, Luce spots Daniel Grigori, who she is immediately attracted to. More odd than that, she feels as though this isn't her first time seeing him. When Daniel spots Luce, he gets wide-eyed right before smiling and gallantly flipping her off. Even though he was rude to her, Luce continually finds herself thinking about him and looking for him. That is until she has a run-in with Molly, who quickly welcomes her to school with a big plate of meatloaf over her head. However, thanks to Molly, Luce is introduced to Penn - the late school caretaker's daughter who decides to stay at Sword & Cross because that's where her father is buried. Although a little eccentric, Penn turns out to be a good information source for Luce. Luce and Daniel talk every once in a while, but each time she's left even more confused than before. A little less than a hundred pages into the novel, you have your first big scene of action that kind of puts the whole novel into swing - before then, it's just a bunch of introductions, Cam flirting with Luce, and you sort of get an idea of why Luce is in Sword & Cross. However, it's never really fully fleshed out in the story, which either may be a hole in the plot or something the author plans on telling in the next book. Either way, you know enough to know there was a tragic accident, she was blamed for it, and now she's in a boarding school with other "troubled teens". I'm going to stop with the play-by-play, but I will say that as the story unravels, you figure out that a lot of people are not what they seem. You also get the whole story on why Daniel seems so familiar to Luce, as well as a big back story on why they may never be able to be together.

Alright, I'll admit ... I judged a book by its cover - bad. Reading the blurb on the back, I didn't really think there would be anything all that intriguing in the book. Why? I thought it would just be a book where you follow a girl who drools over some really hot guy the whole time and that's about it. I have to say that I was definitely wrong. The story is pretty wonderful. As I said in my review for Evernight, the cover would fit better on that. However, not every book has a cover that fits well with the story itself. So, I'll say that, as just a cover, it's an attention-grabber and it's very beautiful. And really, what's better than being a proud owner of a good book with a gorgeous cover? The prologue to the story is actually a flashback, with unnamed characters, but you quickly understand it as the story goes along - and it does it's job as a prologue by catching your attention, making you want to read more. The plot? As mentioned, it does have some holes and you will have some questions after you read the novel. Since it is a part of a series, I am hoping the author will fix that by answering the questions later on in the series. So, I'm going to be lenient on that until I read more of the series. I loved the characters and they fit their persona well - though I do think that Arriane lost a little of her spark as the story went along. I think she faded back a little too much and didn't keep her spunkiness that she originally started out with. There IS an epilogue that goes with the story. After you read it, you'll have a "Whhhhaaaat?!" moment, but it's a good one! It really gets your blood pumping for the next book. The writing is wonderful, as well as the point of view ... which follows Luce in third person, but you do get a grip on the surroundings too. I forgot to mention that the ending is a little heart-wrenching, but it's necessary and gets your hopes up for the sequel.

After a tragedy, Luce Price finds herself at Sword & Cross, a reform boarding school in Savannah. She vows to herself to stay low and not let anything terrible happen around her again. Then she sees Daniel Grigori and her life will never be the same.

There's something familiar about Daniel. What, Luce doesn't know. Everytime she's around the mysterious and aloof Daniel, she has a sense of deja vu.

Daniel has made it clear he wants nothing to do with her. But if that is really true why does he give off mixed messages? Luce is bound to find out more about Daniel even if the truth might be more than she can bear.

I enjoyed this paranormal forbidden romance set in a Southern reform school. Luce has her own terrible secret that she wants to keep hidden but it seems others at Sword and Cross have their own secrets. At first I couldn't see why Luce would keep going after Daniel. Yes, he's cute and all, but at their first meeting he flips her off! The other guy Cam, seemed a better choice. Then I read on and found not all is what it seems. The premise of fallen angels roaming the Earth forever put a unique twist on the whole paranormal genre. I ended up spending all day reading this tale wanting to know what secrets Daniel was hiding. Kate creates a world where love is both dangerous and forbidden. This romantic tale will keep readers glued to the pages.

I liked the sexual tension between both Luce and Daniel. I also liked a couple other characters such as Penn, who seemed to know everything about Sword & Cross except the one truth that really mattered and rebel Arriane who shows her true colors throughout. I can't wait to read Torment, the sequel.

Although this book is a little clichéd in places I still really liked it. The romance is ramped up more than in, say City of Bones, but didn't quite take me to the heights of Twilight. For me, the writing was strong enough to keep me turning those pages wanting to see Luce and Daniel get together and now that they are, but still aren't (if that makes any sense!)it has made me want to read the next book in the Fallen series. There are a few problems though; some of it was predictable, for e.g. Daniel's last name is Grigori, so for anyone who knows anything about the history of angels it was a no-brainer working out he was an angel. It was also obvious that Cam wasn't the guy for Luce with all the serpent symbolism that accompanied him so I never really believed that she would go off with him. However, the fact that Daniel and Cam are now working together at the end of the book has given me an appetite to read on.

Flawed but well worth a look!

Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by the amazing books I’ve read this week, or this book really was just bad. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and found them either irritating (Luce and Daniel) or dull (Cam and Penn). I thought the reform school scenario was an interesting change of setting from other YA paranormal romances, but unfortunately it didn’t add much to the story. This was less of a love story and more of a tale of a disturbed girl obsessing over a guy who was extremely rude to her straight off the bat, while leading on the boring, cute, nice guy. Oh, and she sees shadows which make bad things happen.

I found my eyes glazing over and my brain turning to mush as I read this. But again I think this may have more to do with it not holding up to the other books I’ve been reading. I didn’t want to finish it, but I’m of the mind “it might get better.” It did…a little.

One last note: A greater, cosmic, soul-mate connection does not make up for lack of chemistry! I saw nothing that drew Luce and Daniel together, but rather Daniel just tells Luce that they’re drawn together and always immediately fall in love. So if Daniel says so, it must be so. Free will be damned!

I thought Fallen would be a shoot-and-miss for me. It wasn't that exactly, but it could have been better.

Luce is sent to the Sword & Cross boarding school after she's seeing shadows everywhere and she's the suspect of a dead guy in a burnt-down house. It's your worst-nightmare boarding school, the kind where cell phones are banned, all the other children are psychos, and there are surveillance cameras watching your every move.

She sees Daniel Grigori right from the first day, and get's that weird feeling like she definitely, positively has known this guy before. Daniel obviously doesn't want anything to do with her, but of course she's GOT to find out the truth behind him.

It's good that she wasn't obsessing over Daniel so much that she didn't have time for her friends, or to check out the other cute guy in the school.

In the end, Daniel was WAY too much like "Oh my gosh, you are precious flower, go into the church where you will be safe, and leave the fighting to the big strong angels." (okay, so he didn't say those exact words, but you get the gist). And Luce went along with it! It was just one of those books where the girl was way too soft, always leaving her own fights to someone else. And she and Daniel were a bit too obsessed with each other at the end. Kind of like "I-I can't live without you, Luce. I love you." (and he DID actually say that in the book). Creepy lover alert.

And the whole stalking thing Luce did with Daniel. I mean sure he looked good, but what happened to not judging a book by its cover? He was rude, cold and distant. Until, of course, Luce broke through.

And then there was Daniel and Cam. They were a bit like sparring bulls, fighting over the female. And I didn't even GET why Cam wanted her.

*Spoiler alert* I don't think that pretty much the whole reform school should have been angels. I mean, seriously TWO mortal kids in the whole school and the angels didn't even notice.

It was a good book all in all, even though it was a bit predictable and I didn't like the obsessive love.
Good Points
- Liked the prologue
- Mystery, even though the whole story was basically evident from the first couple of pages
- Liked Luce's friends
- Liked how she was at a reform school

I thought that I would hate Fallen much more than I do. I thought it would be that obsessive love throughout the entire book. But since it was between two guys, and all the other problems swirling inside the plot, I was able to enjoy the book much more than I did with that other angel romance book that I read (Hush, Hush)

There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori. Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

I think that this book was way better than Hush Hush because it was so much better over all. The plot went deeper and twisted different corners. I am really glad that Luce had friends, normally in these books, example; Twilight, they have absolutely no friends what so ever. Bella was so in 'love' with Edward that she had no TIME for friends. But Luce had Arianne (I think thats right...) and Penn. SHE HAD FRIENDS!!!!

Score: Hush Hush-0, Fallen-1

Near the end, it got all intense and way confusing. I don't think that the majority of (spoiler alert!!) the school should of been some sort of angel. How could they live together and not know!!!! I mean seriously!! Not possible, considering that angels are supernatural beings.

Score: Hush Hush-1, Fallen-1

Now the reform school. I thought that was such a clever idea. It supported the idea that Luce was truly messes up, because she was seeing angels, literally! And wearing all black, that must earn some credit.

Score: Hush Hush-1, Fallen-2
Good Points
-I liked the reform school, normally that doesn't happen!
-Mystery, although it was easy to figure out from the prologue
-Luce had friends

At the very start of the story we get a peek of a couple, where one is trying to stay away from the other and the other is trying just as hard to be with that one... but I'll come back to the first chapter in a bit.

Luce Price has arrives at Sword & Cross, a reform school for troublesome teens, and instantly knows that this school isn't like any other school, reform or not, this is a school that she could never have imagined existing. Such a dark, unwelcoming and prison-like place, where contact with the outside world is only allowed in 5 minute weekly phone calls, their uniform is to wear all black and there are security cameras everywhere to monitor your every move. Everything seems hopeless and depressing to Luce until she sees Daniel. The moment her eyes land on Daniel, she is instantly drawn to him and wants to run to him, but why the instant connection? Why does Daniel seem so familiar and comforting to her... and when Daniel wants nothing to do with her and goes out of his way to make sure that she knows he has no interest it only increases Luce's curiosity to find out why he pushes her away and what secrets Daniel may be hiding.

The mystery surrounding Luce and Daniel's pasts is consuming. A page-turner right from the start. We meet other students, Luce's new friends, Daniel's old friends, and at first I just wanted to dismiss them and wished that the story would just concentrate on their relationship. But as time goes on, these other characters play major roles in both of their lives. Not one person can be dismissed nor forgotten. Little by little, we find out why Luce was sent to Sword & Cross, what she can see, what her story is. We also find out why Daniel is so desperate to stay away from Luce. Daniel's story is heart breaking and you cannot help fall for for Daniel and want to hug him too. In the end, we finally hear the whole story that connects Daniel and Luce together... forever! because true love cannot be denied!

I did find that the book was a bit choppy at times because it doesn't go into great details that I would have liked to have seen. But it doesn't keep the story from flowing. We are learning and experiencing everything as Luce is and I really liked that the author followed through with that.

Now, let's get back to that first chapter! It's titled, In The Beginning and takes place in England, 1854. There are no names, the characters are referred to as "He" and "She".

She is drawn to him everyday. He tries to stay away, but has a hard time doing so. He comforts himself by drawing pictures of her, it's obvious that he cares for her deeply. She doesn't know how or why, but she knows that she loves him and wants to be with him and makes it impossible for him to not cave in to her. And then he doesn't... They have their moment and we are left with a huge, oh my god! What just happened?! and of course, you need to know why. I really loved how the first chapter just draws you in by giving us a sort of tease... I have a huge soft spot for forbidden love

This is one of the few books that I actually liked more for the plot and writing rather than characters. The entire plot was dark, dangerous, mysterious. Kate's writing was obviously skillful, and very beautiful. I'd heard so many great things about this one, and I had to try it. Plus, that cover just really pulled me towards it.

The beginning instantly yanked me in. Luce's shady background intrigued me and made me want to know more about her story. What bothered me about her was her obsession with Daniel Grigori. Really, even she called herself "crazy stalker girl" a couple of times. He's beautiful and perfect, but also cold, rude, and distant. What happened to not looking at the outside, but the inside? She wasn't a very relatable character. Of course, even though Luce did seem shallow this way, the prologue does actually explain a bit. I loved the prologue. It drew me in, and kept me fascinated with Luce and Daniel's tragic love story.

This story is about fallen angels, a topic that is definitely one of my favorites (first introduced through Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush). Luce is a girl accused of murdering a boy and being crazy. She knows she isn't, but how is she supposed to explain those shadows that have followed her her entire life? She's sent to Sword & Cross Boarding School after a terrible fire incident that changes her life. Really, I don't know what kind of parent would send their one child to this hell. Obviously, a bad one.

After my disgust with the school passed, I got more into the book. Even though Luce's fetish kind of made me mad at first, Daniel turned out to be pretty sweet. He totally changed my feelings later on. Can't give too much away, so I'll leave it at that.

Daniel is not the only love interest of Luce's. There's also Cam. I didn't really like Cam from the beginning. He seemed kind of... untrustworthy. But that's just my opinion. I'll let you read the book for yourself and decide.

The main characters weren't so great, but I totally loved Penn and Arriane. Penn was just a likable person from the start. Of course, mean person that I am, I was a little suspicious of her at first, because don't the girls that are super nice to the new kids always the ones that back-stab them later? I guess that's at regular schools, not prison camp ones. Arriane's story was very interesting. She had scars on her neck, wore a wristband that tracked her, was put on probation, and had about a million other terrible things related to her. And yet, she was friendly to Luce, probably because of her own lonliness.

While some of this book's characters did need more development, the Gothic elements were really fascinating and can pull the reader right into their grasp. The mystery shrouding the fallen angels in this novel is truly compelling. Suspenseful twists filled the ending that left you with many unanswered questions, and I can't wait to get a copy ofTorment to have them answered.

Title: Fallen
Author: Lauren Kate
So this book was about a 3 1/2.  Normally when I rate a book a 3 it was decent but not interesting enough for me to continue the series. But strangely enough I think this series has enough potential for me to continue reading.

What i really hated was the slow pace of the book . I get the author wants to create mystery but come on I was on page 350 im still trying to figure out whats going on and no one is talking about anything. I felt like there was a good 100 pages that didnt move the book forward. I felt that it wasnt going anywhere.

I didn't like how Luce was so weak. She really wasn't that likeable. There wasn't anything that made her relatable. I did like Daniel though he was very interesting. I believe my favorite thing about this book was Luce & Daniel's destined love to fail.It was heart aching in a way that you just want everything to get better. I did like some of the other characters.I was guessing whos bad or good and all that, which i feel is important because you know a book is good when you are rooting for certain charcters.

The book had an interesting twist. I hated how they really didn't explain the shadows, and what the angels are fighting for if no one can really win.I believe the only reason why I will continue to read the series is because I was left with unanswered questions. Im hoping the series gets better. I'm not too big of a fan of the author's writing but I like the storyline and Im hoping more gets revealed. I was dissapointed with the book but I will read Torment to see if things get better.

The
story talks about a girl called Luce Price who starts her senior year
on a reform school, where she will meet a mysterious guy called Daniel,
who is keeping a secret&

The book is really good. Maybe we are a
little tired of these mysterious guys& but I really like it! I mean, I
didnt know what was going on until the end! And I really enjoyed the
book in this way! The places and the background are very dark and fit
perfectly with the plot and the characters. And when I finished I wanted to read more.

I recommend this book to everybody who like forbidden romance. The only problem is that the second book, Torment, is awful.
