At the very start of the story we get a peek of a couple, where one is trying to stay away from the other and the other is trying just as hard to be with that one... but I'll come back to the first chapter in a bit.

Luce Price has arrives at Sword & Cross, a reform school for troublesome teens, and instantly knows that this school isn't like any other school, reform or not, this is a school that she could never have imagined existing. Such a dark, unwelcoming and prison-like place, where contact with the outside world is only allowed in 5 minute weekly phone calls, their uniform is to wear all black and there are security cameras everywhere to monitor your every move. Everything seems hopeless and depressing to Luce until she sees Daniel. The moment her eyes land on Daniel, she is instantly drawn to him and wants to run to him, but why the instant connection? Why does Daniel seem so familiar and comforting to her... and when Daniel wants nothing to do with her and goes out of his way to make sure that she knows he has no interest it only increases Luce's curiosity to find out why he pushes her away and what secrets Daniel may be hiding.

The mystery surrounding Luce and Daniel's pasts is consuming. A page-turner right from the start. We meet other students, Luce's new friends, Daniel's old friends, and at first I just wanted to dismiss them and wished that the story would just concentrate on their relationship. But as time goes on, these other characters play major roles in both of their lives. Not one person can be dismissed nor forgotten. Little by little, we find out why Luce was sent to Sword & Cross, what she can see, what her story is. We also find out why Daniel is so desperate to stay away from Luce. Daniel's story is heart breaking and you cannot help fall for for Daniel and want to hug him too. In the end, we finally hear the whole story that connects Daniel and Luce together... forever! because true love cannot be denied!

I did find that the book was a bit choppy at times because it doesn't go into great details that I would have liked to have seen. But it doesn't keep the story from flowing. We are learning and experiencing everything as Luce is and I really liked that the author followed through with that.

Now, let's get back to that first chapter! It's titled, In The Beginning and takes place in England, 1854. There are no names, the characters are referred to as "He" and "She".

She is drawn to him everyday. He tries to stay away, but has a hard time doing so. He comforts himself by drawing pictures of her, it's obvious that he cares for her deeply. She doesn't know how or why, but she knows that she loves him and wants to be with him and makes it impossible for him to not cave in to her. And then he doesn't... They have their moment and we are left with a huge, oh my god! What just happened?! and of course, you need to know why. I really loved how the first chapter just draws you in by giving us a sort of tease... I have a huge soft spot for forbidden love

WOW!:
The only word I can think of to summarize my review of "Fallen" by
Lauren Kate. Her debut novel not only sparkles, it charms to the core of
your soul.

I
could not put this book down. Staying up past midnight, I turned the
pages, telling myself just a couple of more minutes. Reluctantly, I had
to go to sleep. But the next morning, I immediately picked up the book
to finish it -- that's good fiction! What makes it even better fiction
-- I can't wait until September 28, 2010 when the second book,
"Torment," is released.

Not
only is the book cover one of the most stunning I've ever seen, but it
also feels like velvet (a trend I've noticed in recent hardcover books).
It definitely fulfills its promise of a thrilling book.

The
characters are engaging and unique, especially Luce Price, the
protagonist torn between mysterious Daniel Grigori and dangerous Cam
Briel at the boarding/reform school, Sword & Cross. Both of the male
leads oozed cool in their own unique way. Luce's back story is
extremely interesting, especially the scary shadows she's seen all her
life. I also like her parents and her loving feeling toward them despite
them putting her away for not being "normal."

The
residents of Sword & Cross are very clever. But the name of the
school confused me. I thought it was going to be a paranormal version of
Hogwarts which didn't seem to be the case. Nevertheless, I enjoyed
every word of the book, so much that I plan on reading it again.

SPOILER:
The one plot twist I wish I hadn't known was that Daniel was a fallen
angel and his reason for not wanting anything to do with Luce. Obviously
the publisher's synopsis mentions angels, but nothing more, however if
you were to read the synopsis on Barnes and Noble's website, it almost
gives the major plot twists away. I'm glad I didn't see that synopsis
before I read the book. END SPOILER.

The
Scoop: "Fallen" is, currently, in development by Walt Disney Pictures.
Kathyrn Price and Nichole Millard of Mayhem Pictures (Invincible, Secretariat, Tooth Fairy) are signed on as screenwriters. Here's hoping they do it justice because Invincible was a very good film, but Tooth Fairy -- not so much.

So...am I Team Daniel or Team Cam? I really like Daniel, but he seems
like he's not telling the whole truth about Luce's past. Despite his
dark side, Cam appears to be more genuine, so it's Team Cam for me. But
I'm sure he's hiding some dark secrets too. After all, they're at Sword
& Cross. Which interestingly enough wasn't explained. Will more
information will be revealed in the second book?

"Fallen"
was unlike any YA paranormal book I've read before. It goes on my list
of top fave books. "Fallen" gave me the same feeling after I read Harry
Potter for the first time: I want more!

Fallen is one of those books that you just can not put down until you are done and then when you are done with it you crave more. i loved it, Luce,Daniel and Penn were my favorite characters. Although at first i didn't really like Daniel until the end when i found out why he was being such a meanie to Luce. This book is romantic, thrilling, scary (in a way), and dare i say it heavenly. Originally i checked out this book from my school library thinking it was not a series, but it was at first i wanted to stop reading it (i'm trying to get away from series). But i could just not put the freaking book down. I read this book in 6 hours. (fast reader). My absolute favorite part of the book is when Luce sees Daniel for real for the first time. The end is really good to. I would recommend this to anyone. Who likes action, romance, and a thriller. This was one of the greatest books i have read.
