I liked how Clare weaved her knowledge of the Old Testament into this series and the knowledge of the battle that takes place in the spiritual realm which is mentioned (and warned about) in the New Testament.

I was also struck by how the mundanes choose not to "see" what takes place right in front of their eyes too. I don't know if that was intentional and I realize this story is fiction but I tend to "read between the lines" and don't just see the surface story. For example, is the Lord of the Rings really about a gold ring, a few hobbits, some elves, or dwarfs? No. Neither is this story just about a group of teenagers who battle demons. It's about good verses evil, sacrifice, family, friendship, love, seeing yourself for who you truly are and becoming the person you were created to be.

Good Points
Jace Wayland ;)

In the beginning of the book Clary's mother goes missing and she finds out she is a shadowhunter. Throughout the book she falls for Jace, who is also a shadowhunter and becomes friend with his siblings, Isabelle and Alec. This book also takes place in a world where vampires, werewolves, faeries, demons, warlocks and shadowhunters live secretly among humans.
I loved the setting of the book. I think it was perfect because New York is the one place where anything can happen and theres so many people, it's the perfect place where a secret world would live. I love the characters, too. I love how they all have different personalities and how they all have the same purpose, which is to kill demons.
I liked it because it was a perfect balance of everything. It was funny, intense, sad, mysterious, with a side of realistic problems that any teen can relate to.

The Mortal Instruments series is the best thing since Harry Potter.  It's a little bit Harry Potter and a little bit Twilight and a lot something special all of it's own.  While out dancing with her bestfriend, Simon, Clary witness a strange event.  This event, changes her life in ways she could never imagine, ultimately leading to the fight of her life. There are vampires, demons, werewolfs and angels.  I read this thick, 485 page book in less than a day.  It's a magical, entertaining book that is destined to be the next big series.

Outstanding. This book was amazing. Full of everything that anyone would want in a series. Love, adventure, drama, action, and mystery. This book was extremely well rounded, it followed an interesting plot and even had a twist at the ending that kept me dying to read the next one. I have successfully finished all the books that are in this series so far, and I am in love with this world and its characters. Keep reading it just gets better.

this book is like wow!

i think you have to read the whole book to really understand it. but it had me at the first page! this book has almost everything in it and it is apart of one of my many favorite series!

there is a lot of mystery and romance in this book and the next two(city of ashes& city of glass) are even better and you get a better look at clary and jace's steamy relationship. also you will find out things you never imagined!
i am 15 and i love the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES!

Ugh. This was a horrible book, I haven't disliked something this much in a long time. I'm giving it two stars because I was at least compelled enough to read the whole thing.

First of all...the writing. There were WAY too many awful similes that had me rolling my eyes and snorting with distaste. I don't really care that much about writing styles...so for me to say the writing was bad really is saying something. I felt like she was making the characters do things to fit into the story, and that has always bugged me. I think the story should fit the characters...you shouldn't have to make them do things that seem unnatural.

The plot, somewhat interesting...but not carried out well at all. About halfway through I realized it really wasn't going to get better and thought "oh well, at least things with Jace and Clary are somewhat interesting." Then (major spoiler ahead, so don't read on if you plan on picking this up)...they turn out to be brother/sister?? What the heck, they had kissed and had wonderful chemistry and they are SIBLINGS? Their relationship was about the only thing interesting or captured well in the story...and even that was ruined.

I really had high hopes for this too. Bummer.

I really liked this book, even liked it WAY better than Twilight.  Ok, I'm not a "YA" anymore, but throughly enjoyed this book.  It has great suspense, humor and action, without the more "adult" twists.  The story is well told, the author is a good writer, she can tell the story with a complete visual.  If you like vampires, werewolfs, etc. this is a great story set in modern time.

I will read again!

I came across this series while looking
for e-books online. While I didnt find the e-book, I did find a sample
of the audiobook for the first in the series, City of Bones, which I
downloaded. I didnt get around to actually listening to it until I had
my wisdom teeth removed a few weeks ago, and I needed something to do
to help me relax and take my mind off of my sore mouth before bed. The
series had been on my reading list for awhile, but was always checked
out and on reserve at the library.

Now I know why.

The series consists of the following three books: City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass.

The
main character of the series is Clary Fray, a teenage girl who lives
with her single mom in New York. Her life seems average, until the
night when she comes across three Shadowhunters (demon hunters), in a
local night club. Whats more is, Clary is the only one who can see
them. Soon after her strange encounter, Clarys mother disappears, and
Clary herself is attacked by a demon. As Clary and her best friend,
Simon, search for answers, Clary begins to realize that things are not
always what they seem, and she is thrust into a world of demons,
Downworlders (vampires, warlocks, faeries, and werewolves), and
Shadowhunters.

This series was
extremely well-written, and will satisfy teens looking for another
fantasy romance as well as those readers who are looking for something
a bit deeper. The characters are well-developed and the reader is
easily able to identify with them, as well as with the situations they
are placed in. The books deal with prevalent teen issues such as love,
heartbreak, family, and friendship as well as more advanced topics such
as redemption, temptation, and even the argument of nature vs.nurture.
With an overabundance of teen fantasy novels being published since the
onset of the Twilight saga, the Mortal Instruments series offers
something that stands out above the rest.
