2015 B.R.A.G. MEDALLION HONOREE. 2015 FINALIST in the YOUNG ADULT CATEGORY, Independent Publishers of New England. 2015 IPNE FINALIST for Literary Fiction. Based on a true story.

Joey Hanser is a very handsome Labrador Retriever who loves to run and run. He also has endless amounts of energy and curiosity and needs to explore and explore. To do so, however, he must escape from the family yard and home. While his creative escapologies win him admiration from all, they also land him in big trouble. The trouble more than doubles when his human mom wakes up one morning and finds him gone. In DOGS DON'T LOOK BOTH WAYS, author Jane Hanser presents an adventure-filled and endearing coming-of-age story about a dog and his family.

A true and suspenseful story, written in a breezy, lively, light-hearted voice, about discovery and freedom, rules and boundaries, communication and caring for a dog, and, of course, our dependence on the kindness of others.

Joey is a loveable dog who cannot stay out of trouble. He loves to run with his dad, and gets bored when he is home by himself or with his mom. His morning run just isn’t enough exercise for a Labrador retriever. He is always using his senses to find ways out of the backyard fence to explore the world beyond. This always gets him in trouble with his “mom” who usually gets a call from a friend or neighbor who saw him out wandering. One day after Joey “escaped” from his backyard; a car accident nearly kills him. The road back to healing and health is a long and arduous climb for both Joey and his family.

Dogs Don't Look Both Ways is a well written, character driven story with numerous escapades by Joey. Writing from Joey’s point of view must have been a difficult task for the author. Though it can be an enjoyable read for an adult, I believe it would be better suited to a child who is old enough to read chapter books. I tired of reading the dog’s words and thoughts.

Dogs Don’t Look Both Ways is based on a true story.

A copy of this book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Told from the viewpoint of the family dog, we are taken on a day by day recollection of life when led by the nose. Here, we meet Joey and his family as they tackle life one adventure at a time. From birth to separation from his siblings, making his new home his own to becoming king of the daily run with his new dad, we are there for it all...until one day, his curiosity takes him off leash and out of bounds a time too many with disastrous consequences.

Now, before you go getting the tissues, let me lay your mind to rest...there is a happy ending to this one lacking and it lacks fluffy clouds, rainbows and eternal parks. That's right, Joey does survive his encounter between beast and machine but the real question wasn't his survival; after all, he's a dog and they are made of pretty strong stuff! The REAL question was would his quality of life ever be the same? Now THAT'S the answer you'll have to seek between the pages. Along the way, you'll make friends with many in pet-friendly-occupations, seeing just how dedicated they are to their crafts. You'll learn a thing or two about pet parenting, such as how fences are our friends, "lampshades" are not fun for anyone, and never underestimate the power of the bound between man and dog...it's enough to raise mountains.
