The long-awaited new novel in the New York Times best-selling Darkest Minds series, now a major motion picture. Five years after the destruction of the so-called rehabilitation camps that imprisoned her and countless other Psi kids, seventeen-year-old Suzume "Zu" Kimura has assumed the role of spokesperson for the interim government, fighting for the rights of Psi kids against a growing tide of misinformation and prejudice. But when she is accused of committing a horrifying act, she is forced to go on the run once more in order to stay alive. Determined to clear her name, Zu finds herself in an uncomfortable alliance with Roman and Priyanka, two mysterious Psi who could either help her prove her innocence or betray her before she gets the chance. But as they travel in search of safety and answers, and Zu grows closer to the people she knows she shouldn't trust, they uncover even darker things roiling beneath the veneer of the country's recovery. With her future-and the future of all Psi-on the line, Zu must use her powerful voice to fight back against forces that seek to drive the Psi into the shadows and save the friends who were once her protectors. From #1 New York Times best-selling author Alexandra Bracken comes a harrowing story of resilience, resistance, and reckoning that will thrill loyal fans and new readers alike.

Five years have passed since the 'rehabilitation' camps have been shut down. Suzume 'Zu' is now seventeen years old and working with the new government to help other children who were affected by the camps. Zu is blamed when an horrific act of violence happens at a college rally where she's one of the keynote speakers. She ends up on the run with two other Psi teens, Roman and Priyanka, in order to find out who really was behind the tragedy and to clear her name. But nothing is what it seems. Seems that old prejudices still linger against Psi children and teens. And there's those who are willing to do anything to keep them from coming back.

What worked: This is a must read dystopian series. There are so many parallels to what is happening in our current country with the internment camps. While in this series the government rounds up children and teens who 'survive' a deadly virus only to develop super powers.

In this book, readers see this world through the eyes of Zu. She's now seventeen and her way to make a difference is to work with new US president Cruz. I really like Zu. Readers see her conflict and struggle especially in the scene where she finds Liam and his new home with Ruby and other Psi children. She wants to still be a part of this 'family', but knows her journey will lead her on another path. She's strong, feisty, and smart. Other characters from the series show up like Chubs, Vi, and even Chancy. Plus, readers find out that Ruby has been 'missing'. The final reveal is stunning and I hope we'll find out more.

Enthralling, action-packed dystopian novel that continues the quest of Psi children in a world that has gone tipsy turvy and the girl who is willing to risk everything in order to not only to clear her name, but to right the wrongs against her and others.

A must read for any reader who loves a good dystopian series. This series won't disappoint. I do recommend reading the first book in the series in order to get the backstory of this world.

It's been five years since the "rehabilitation" camps have been destroyed and now, everyone is working on rebuilding. Zu is the spokesperson, but it isn't easy. Soon, her life is on the line and Zu must rely on herself and those around her to clear her name and save her skin.

THE DARKEST LEGACY is from Zu's POV and I really loved seeing all of my favorite characters return in this one. I don't want to give any of the details away but wow. The writing is alluring and I wanted to devour it as quickly as I could manage. There's action, politics, and so much more that made my heart race and put my emotions into overtime.

I was curious to see where this one would go since I wasn't expecting another book in The Darkest Minds Series, but oh man. I absolutely loved it. Alexandra Bracken is an amazing writer and never ceases to amaze me with the tales she weaves. THE DARKEST LEGACY had me drawn in from cover to cover. Even though it's a long book, I didn't find myself bored once so don't be intimidated and dive right in.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of dystopia, suspense, and action. This is one that Alexandra Bracken fans won't want to miss.

"The Darkest Legacy" continues The Darkest Minds series after the resolutions of the trilogy. This time, we follow Suzume (Zu). Zu has been working for the government, trying to help get the country back on track and work within the system to protect the Psi. However, what she is beginning to realize is that she is becoming a mouthpiece for a government that is no longer working with her. At a talk where they are getting her to announce a new law (without warning her in advance), a warning scrolls on the screen that someone is out to kill her. Soon, she realizes that the protectors with her are actually against her and a bomb explodes.

Zu is now on the run with two highly trained Psi, Roman and Priyanka. They are not being honest with her, but she is not sure why. Without anyone else she can trust and on the run from the government she used to work for but now is accusing her of terrorism, Zu must trust these two- to an extent. As they work together, they learn more about what the government is really doing, and the path to freedom and reconciliation is not as straight-forward as it seemed at the end of the trilogy.

This book felt very much like the earlier books, except now, at the end of the trilogy, it had seemed optimistic and closed- now, corruption abounds and the path to where they want to be is again occluded. The new characters brought some interesting elements into the series. Although we don't delve into it so much, we see some of the work Zu has done with her therapist to try to recover from the terrible events of the past. However, now we are back on the run and dodging danger at every turn, while also trying to work towards a better future.

I believe it is necessary to have read the first books in order to understand this one; it is not a stand-alone. It is action-packed and has the suspense-like feel you would expect in this series. I was expecting something a little different with more recovery and smaller problems, after the ending of the third book. However, this easily drew me back in to the world, and I am curious to see where this will go in the next (there is a non-conclusive ending but we do get some small closures/not a huge cliffhanger). I liked Zu and I enjoyed getting into her head in this story- I also enjoyed the new characters, though I wasn't totally sold on the romance here. Hopefully, this will develop more in future books (they don't spend much time getting closer in this one).

Overall, this was a good read and I am curious to read Zu's next book! Please note that I received a copy through bookish first. All opinions are my own.
