Fifteen-year-old Alex is a spinner. His friends are called dummies. Two clandestine groups of humans want his power. And an ancient evil is stalking him. If people weren’t being murdered, Alex might laugh at how his life turned into a horror movie overnight. In a wheelchair since birth, his freakish ability has gotten him kicked out of ten foster homes since the age of four. Now saddled with a sadistic housemother who uses his spinning to “fix” the kids she injures, Alex and his misfit group of learning disabled classmates are the only ones who can solve the mystery of his birth before more people meet a gruesome end. They want to know who murdered their beloved teacher, and why the hot young substitute acts like she’s flirting with them. Then there’s the mysterious medallion that seems to have unleashed something evil, and an ancient prophecy suggesting Alex has the power to destroy the world. The boys break into homes, dig up graves, fight for their lives against feral cats, and ultimately confront a malevolence as old as humanity. Friendships are tested, secrets uncovered, love spoken, and destiny revealed. The kid who’s always been a loner will finally learn the value of friends, family, and loyalty. If he survives…

This book. Wow. I was blown away with how good Spinner is. The story is so original and kept me wanting more the whole way through. Bowler starts with action and keeps it coming. I have read a couple of horror novels, but none have affected me this way. I love the way everything played out. I would get to the end of a chapter with the notion of putting the book down for the evening but a cliffhanger at the end kept me going. I really enjoyed the suspense and the guessing that is done the whole way through. Spinner will keep you wanting more as you read it. Each plot is very well thought out and flows into the next problem Alex and his friends need to face.

Beyond the story, the characters in this book were like none other. Alex and his friends each had a certain disability that puts them all in a special ed class together. Their “special edness” makes their bond unbreakable. I thought this was a great and unique approach. While they had to endure problems that every protagonist needs to face, they have a harder time trying to solve it. I really enjoyed seeing them overcome the obstacles that stood in their way to come out on top. Alex is an amazing main character. He truly is everything you want in a hero. He is kind, considerate, and always puts others first. It was great to see how his personality really shines in difficult situations. Roy, the loyal friend, is always by Alex's side and never gives up on him. Each of the other friends all have their special characteristics that they bring to the story. I think one of my favorite things that Bowler did in this story was having the boys rely on adults. This doesn’t happen too often in novels and it was a nice change.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Spinner by Michael J. Bowler was an enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys horror and action. The story was unique and kept the interest there. I always wanted to know what came next. The development of the plot flowed and was very well placed. Along with an amazing story, the characters were so well crafted. They are a team that you don’t really see in novels and it was very refreshing. Open yourself up to this misfit group and you will be greatly rewarded.
