Wisteria lives with the Lady Ewaren and her apprentice Alysen, hunting in the woods beyond the village. She returns one day elated, with a massive catch, only to find the village sacked an its inhabitants, including the Lady Ewaren, dead, all but the fierce young Alysen. Alysen throws herself at the woman who has been almost a sister to her, blaming her for their distruction.
This book, though part of a series, can be read independently, which is how I read it. I love it, and yet I have mixed feelings about it- the plot may have been overdone in fantasy. However, the writing more than excuses the overused plotline.
This is one of the few books where the cover actually gives a good idea of what the story is about, so if you like it you will probably like the book.
