Hello!

Reading/play advocates and Co-Founders Valarie Budayr {Jump into a Book} and Mia Wenjen {Pragmatic Mom} are proud to announce the 4th annual Multicultural Children’s Book Day event will occur on Tuesday January 27th, 2017,.

During MCCBD 2015, this multi-national event achieved 18.2 million social impressions and that number skyrocketed to a whopping 96 million social impressions during our 2016 event. This valuable children’s literacy initiative continues to grow and make an impact thanks to the 70+ authors, 21 Sponsors, 12 CoHosts, over 200 participating review bloggers and the parents, teachers and librarians who continue to support this cause.

Why It All Began

Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Through Multicultural Children’s Book Day, Mia and Valarie’s mission is to not only raise awareness for children’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these books into classrooms and libraries.

About Us

Every year MCCBD’s main focuses is on multicultural children’s books and what is needed to get these books on shelves and into the hands of deserving families through book donations and fundraising. The MCCBD project also offers a Multicultural Children’s Book Day Classroom Reading Initiative where teachers can receive a FREE diversity book for their classroom library!

Using their deep reach and years of expertise, Valarie and Mia are providing an “in” with their readership and will be promoting sponsors via name mention, products or service in a new and fresh way.

**For MCCBD 2017 we will also be implementing advanced tracking and social media analytics for more defined information and feedback for our sponsors. In 2016, the January 27th event had a proven 96 million social impression shares over the course of three days and we predict our reach will become even larger this year.

**For our 2017 event we will be implementing new ways to reach out to schools, libraries and organizations in need to supply them with multicultural books for young readers.

(If you know of a school, library or organization that could use MCCBD’s help, please email the Project Manager at [email protected])

**MCCBD is a 501-3c non-profit.

**This event has achieved nationwide attention over many different news venues. Multicultural Children’s Book Day has, and will continue to, encourage a dialogue between publishers, parents, teachers, authors and book-sellers on the importance of getting diverse children’s books into the hands of young readers.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day: What is a Multicultural Book?

During MCCBD, we would like to focus on bringing attention to all of the amazing children’s books available that celebrate diversity. In order to stay true to the mission of this event, co-creators Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen have created a definition for “multicultural books” as it applies to this event:

Multicultural Children’s Books Are:

  • Books that contain characters of color as well as characters that represent a minority point of view. Children need to “find themselves” within the pages of the books they read.

  • Books that share ideas, stories and information about cultures, race, religion, language and traditions.

  • Books that embrace our world and offer children new ways to connect to a diverse and richer world.

What Are We Doing to Get The Word Out?

  • Via Social Media Reach of Co-Creators: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest and blogs.

  • Via additional Social Media Reach of our CoHosts, authors, publishers and participating children’s book bloggers (to be updated as bloggers commit).

  • Traditional PR outreach: National, print and digital publications.

  • Promotion of this event will begin months in advance as we announce sponsors, promotions, review bloggers and other event details, and lead up to the event on January 27th.

  • Via the new Multicultural Children’s Book Day website that will have its own robust editorial calendar.

Summary:

To promote this event, Valarie and Mia are tapping into their combined community of over 60,000 readers, 143,000+ Pinterest followers, Over 80,000+ Twitter followers, over 7,000+ Instagram followers, 13,000+ Google+ followers and 8,000+ Facebook Likers.

Our website www.MulticulturalChildrensBookDay.com will continue to be a central location for conversations about multicultural children’s books, author visits, contests, giveaways and anything that keeps this initiative active all year long. Sponsors will be able to leave their links and sidebar ads in place from the date of purchase until planning for the next month begins (typically August of coming year) to get maximum exposure and visibility.

As a publisher, author, news service or blogger, you know how important it is to get books into the hands of families and young readers. We hope you can join us for Multicultural Children’s Book Day and help us in our mission to raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these types of books into classrooms and libraries.
