This was such an amazing book. MOON CHOSEN is about a young girl Mari who lives with her mother, the Moon Woman of the Clan Weaver. They are called Earth Walkers. Mari’s mother washes the men and women of the tribe, the men so they don’t become violent and the women so they don’t become depressed.The Earth Walkers are energized and cleansed by the moon. Then there is the Tribe of Trees, men and women who become companions to dogs. They live their life in the trees and are energized by the sun. I loved the concept of this book. It wasn’t something I had read before, but it was something that was definitely up my alley. I am so glad that I took a chance on this book, because I fell IN LOVE WITH IT. It was so good. The world and the characters, not only amazing but so intriguing. I wanted to know everything about this world as quickly as possible and I never wanted it to end. This book is a dystopian novel and while it, obviously, had the similar traits of a dystopian it wasn’t one I had read before. The different Tribes and clans that coexist in this world, the way they are so misinformed about each other, it was all so interesting. I found myself so absorbed into this world that I often forgot to take notes.
The world in MOON CHOSEN falls in to chaos after technology fails and people begin to get diseases and die. Many of the people who live in the cities decide to flee to the forest. Which is where the Earth Walkers and the Tribe of Trees come from. But that’s not all who live in the forest. There are so many people who live in this world that we haven’t met yet, Tribes that bond with cats instead of dogs, and women who bond with horses. I can only hope that we will learn more about the many tribes and clans in the next book. The setting was amazing and I loved learning more and more about this world, especially when I learned that it wasn’t set in the past but in a future world. But what I loved the most was the characters and their friendships. Mari and Nik are the two main ones, and the ones I found myself most drawn to but the little kid bits into the bad guys POVs were so interesting and so insightful that I never hated reading those parts. I loved seeing what they were doing and how they thought what they were doing was right.
Mari was probably one of my favorite MCs that I’ve read in a long time. She wasn’t willing to blindly give her whole life to a tribe that never once accepted her, but I also loved was how much she begins to trust herself and the people who are apart of her clan and even those who aren’t. Mari doesn’t see herself as a kind person, but everything she does betrays that thought. She helps those who need it because that’s the way she was raised. For me she was a really greatly written character. She wasn’t without faults but she knew who she was even if it took her awhile to get there. And I am so excited to see where her journey takes her and Nik. Nik was a character that I didn’t immediately love, but he as well as Mari really grow into their own during the course of this book.
Then there is the friendships in this book, well one in particular. Mari and Sora begin the book as enemies, and I absolutely LOVE that they didn’t stay that way. I honestly thought that Sora was going to be the typical mean girl in the book, and I was so happy when I was wrong. Sora is amazing and strong and feisty. She knows who she is and what she likes. She wants to be a Moon Woman. The more you get to know each character, the more invested you get in their journey. Sora was there when Mari needed her, even if Mari didn’t want her to be. I am here all the way for female friendships in books, and I think Mari and Sora’s friendship is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to see more of that in the next book.
What left me wanting more:
There wasn’t anything that bothered me with this book. Everything worked. The characters, the world, the multiple POVs. It made this book one that is impossible to put down. Overall I have nothing but praise for this book. It was wonderful and fun and sad and swoony. I always say that sometimes the books you don’t expect are the ones that turn out to be amazing. So many times I have stumbled across a book that I was apprehensive to read, and I ended up falling in love with it. This is what it was like reading MOON CHOSEN for me. I had heard so many good things, but went into it with some doubts. I am so glad I took a chance on this book. I am so glad that I read it. I am in love with this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Curse waiting a whole year for the next one.
Anyways, BRB i’m going to preorder this book stat and I suggest you do the same! You won’t regret it trust me. This book is worth the read!

"Moon Chosen" is an intricate post-apocalyptic tale. After the sun has scorched the planet and most of the land has been sunk into the ocean, people have fragmented into three main groups: Nik's tribe who live in the trees and bond to dogs focusing on the sun, Mari's tribe who live on the earth/in caves and focus on the moon, and Dead Eye's urban dwelling Skin Stealers who kill and skin humans (they need the skins to live in the exposed cities). Mari and Nik are the next in line for leadership, as Mari's mother is the leader of her clan and Nik's father is the leader of his. Bugs are the dominant species (take the cockroach nuclear war theory to monstrous attacking bugs lurking in the forests).
Mari's tribe, led by women, seems to be at the bottom of the food chain (not surprising perhaps), as the tree dwellers enslave them and the Skin Stealers will attack them. However, Mari and her mother, Leda, have a close-guarded secret- Mari's father was a member of the sun-worshiping tree tribe. Thus, when a young dog escapes, it runs to Mari to bind itself to her. As the young pup was one which Nik had his eyes on, he follows and they meet, with a Romeo-and-Juliet-like tale ensuing.
It's quite a complex world which Cast has created (and this is the reason for the length of the book)- there are so many people and actions vying for the reader's attention that it is easy to get lost early in the book. It comes together when the action really begins (the pup running away) and the storyteller in Nik's tribe gives some context and history. I wish it had begun with this information, as the first part of the book was a little hard to follow- it was an "Ooooh!" moment for me, for sure. However, after that point, it became a much quicker/easier (though still very complex and intricate) read.
It fits the fantasy genre really well, and so as not to give spoilers, I'll just say that once I got the people and plot, I liked it alright. There were some things I was not so fond of (Mari is pretty immature and naïve and I found some of their relationship hard to grasp) and also some really intense scenes that I am not sure I would recommend to many young readers. However, for fantasy lovers, I think this is a world they will truly enjoy!
