We’re so pleased to share the cover for April Genevieve Tucholke’s Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It has to be one of my favorite covers of the year!

But before we show you the pretty, here’s a message from April:

Hey there, YABC. Here be the cover for my little devil book with the long, long, long title.

I asked for, and received, a font-driven cover for BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA. Thank you Dial. Thank you Kristin Smith. The typeface was designed specifically for my book by Simon Alander, and I love it. Gothic. Timeless. And the crashing, pounding sea in the background perfectly represents the rotting-mansion-by-the-sea setting. The icing on the cake? They managed to fit my long, long, long name on the cover as well. “Genevieve” didn’t get cut. Awesome.

Thanks so much for hosting this reveal, YABC. You rule.

DevilDeepBlueSea FINAL LR

AAAAGGGGHHHHH How awesome is this cover?!

Violet’s grandmother had warned her about the Devil, had talked about him often, as though he were a best friend, or an old lover. But she never told Violet that the Devil could be real. She never told Violet that the Devil could be a dark-haired boy in vintage clothes who takes naps in the sun and likes old movies and vigilante justice.

River West is the seventeen-year old stranger renting the guesthouse behind the rotting mansion on the sea, where Violet lives. And as eerie things start happening in Violet’s town, she begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling, coffee-loving liar with rascally eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something else? Something…evil?

Violet’s already so knee-deep in love she can’t see straight.

And that’s just how River likes it.

Yikes. I don’t know about you, but that sounds FREAKING FABULOUS.

Would you like to win an ARC when they’re available? I thought so! Simply fill out the entry form below. One lucky US winner will also receive a BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA starter kit: Everything you need in the form of movies, music, books, and coffee before you start reading.

Items in the starter kit may or may not include: A lock of my hair, a dvd of Casablanca,  Faulkner’s short stories, a love potion, Hawthorne’s short stories, a Moka pot, a mad woman locked in an attic, locally-roasted espresso beans, a book on origami, a red-haired magician, dark chocolate, a set of watercolor paints, a badly written poem, a Robert Johnson cd, whatever is currently in my pocket, and a key to a house that burned down years ago.

I’m so jealous of the winner right now. April, can I get my own starter kit please?!

Let us know what you think about the cover in the comments, and make sure to add this one to your TBR list! BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA will be available August 2013 from Dial/Penguin.

I thought: crowded, at first, though after, I liked the way the setting portrays the title. And the font is pretty, even though that was why I’d initially felt there was too much going on. It also kinda reminds me of the kind of font used for a lot of romance novels lol. Overall, interesting– not your average YA cover.
