"The Heart Hunter" is set on the cursed island of Envecor, where everyone is doomed to wear their heart outside their body and are immortal—unable to die, to change, to have children—until they find their soul mate. Paired soul mates are then turned mortal, freed from the curse, and able to leave. But all fairy tales have a dark side: those who don’t want to lose their immortality pay “Heart Hunters” to find their soul mates and kill them so they may remain immortal. Psyche, a Heart Hunter, is hired by the king to kill his soulmate. As she sets out on her quest, she begins her own journey of mending her broken heart and learning to trust again.

The island of Envecor is cursed. They say Time and Death fell in love, and their love resulted in a place where people are immortal and carry their hearts outside their bodies. They may only ever change and leave the island if they find their soulmate. Psyche is a Heart Hunter, someone with a broken heart who can kill a soulmate link for a price. When the king requests her services to track down his own soulmate and take care of him, she finds a unique challenge: her broken heart abilities can’t touch someone with a golden heart.

3 Reasons to Read THE HEART HUNTER:

1. The jaw-dropping illustration: The colors in THE HEART HUNTER are beautiful, mostly highlighting the pink/red tones. The scenes that feature close-ups of a heart are incredibly detailed.

2. The depiction of trauma and depression: Psyche, being a Heart Hunter, has a broken heart from something that happened to her. Even when she gets an opportunity (early on in the story) to have her heart fixed, she doesn’t want to take it because she can at least be certain of her current pain and not have to chance more breaks later. Anyone who has suffered from grief or heartache will easily understand how Psyche feels. Because of that, this is a heavier book, but there are lovely moments of comic relief throughout, especially from Psyche’s grumpiness.

3. The mythology: The initial premise of having to carry your heart outside your body was already cool, but this story gets even cooler with its use of concepts of the heart, like a heart of gold, a bleeding heart, pouring your heart out, etc. I love how it all ties back to the curse’s origins in Time and Death’s romance.

Readers who want a story that’s a little different, a little weird, and filled with a whole lot of heart will love THE HEART HUNTER.
