When Anna gets knocked off her horse, she wakes up in the hands of traders who specialize in selling slaves. Scared to give away that she's really a princess, she keeps this bit of information to herself. Especially when she finds herself in the castle of her father's greatest enemy. Here, she works as a servant and continues to keep her identity a secret.

By chance, Anna runs into someone who recognizes her as noble birth and is determined to get her back home. She learns his name as Jack, and while waiting for him to help her escape, she learns of a plan to attack her kingdom. The need to get home magnifies tenfold and she must rely on Jack to get her there. Along the way, she learns more and more about him and herself.

GEMS OF FIRE is a young adult fantasy about a princess searching for her place in her father's life while also keeping in mind what's best for her kingdom. Anna is a strong female lead and is finding where she belongs and who she is. She also learns that she's stronger than she thinks. I adore Jack. He's kind, patient, and loyal and wants to build Anna up rather than bring her down.

Final Verdict: While there were some slow parts, overall the story is interesting and perfect for fans of princesses, fantasy, coming of age, and magic.
