** spoiler alert ** The story of a society where people choose to separate themselves into 5 different groups ; the brave, the honest, the knowledge seekers, the selfless and the amity, who i guess just want to get along..?
However people are not just honest or just selfless or just brave. Some people have more than one faction in their blood. Those people are considered dangerous rebels.

The entire society is based on understanding how people think according to their disposition to each faction and anticipating their behavior. Not only that but putting them with other like minded people so they all kinda reinforce each other's behavior.

People are discouraged from associating with other factions.

While on the fringes of this society live a group of people who failed to belong to any specific faction. they are called the factionless; they are the proletariat of this world. They live in poverty and only get the odd job that no one wants now and then.

The world this novel is set in thinks of independent thought as a crime punishable by alienation and a life without the basic necessities of existence.

Divergent, if you haven't heard of it(I doubt it)it the story of an future dystopian world were people are classified as factions: Abnegation, who put everyone needs first instead of their own, the Dauntless, who are fearless, the Erudite who are into learning knew things, the Amity who are peaceful and earth loving, and the Candor who are brutally honest. It started by telling the life of Beatrice, a sixteen year old who loves under the factor of Abnegation and has to choose if she wants to stay or transfer to another factor like everyone does when they are sixteen. It started a little slow for me, but maybe is the way it's written making Beatrice(Tris) the narrator telling the story from her perspective. (Would love the perspective of Four, I just love him). It did pick up and when it did I was hooked to the very end. Divergent has plenty of action, adventures, secrets, mystery, humor and a bit of romance making it a great story about what make us human. My favorite character (if you haven't figured that out yet) is Four (Tobias). He seems the most human and real to me. He is flawed but gifted in many ways. Love how he evolves through the story. I liked the feels of the Hunger Games in the story but unlike the Hunger Games, I do want to read the sequel. After reading it, all I keep thinking is Why it took me so long to pick up this book. What was I thinking? because it's a wonderful piece of work. Insurgent here I come. 4.5 Stars (OK maybe 5 stars for Four)

In the world of Divergent Chicago is divided into five sections. Each section has a group of individuals who are unique in their own way. Dauntless is the home of the brave. They are dressed in all black with tattoos and take the motto YOLO to heart. They do parkour, jump over buildings, and even walk on trains. Abnegation is a very peaceful and selfless and do not care about their appearance. They are normally dressed in all grey and have the same hairstyle. Their members are not even allowed to look in the mirror! Abnegation is where the subject of our story came from first until the switched factions because of the Aptitude test. The Eurudites are the smartest and most intellectual of the factions. They are the group that helped create the Aptitude test and are normally dressed in all blue and glasses (even the ones who do not need a prescription). Candor members are very honest. They are always dressed in suits and are the businessmen of the factions. I find this very ironic because the stereotype of the average businessman is selfish and dishonest. The final faction is called Amity. They are peaceful and loving people who take their faction name to heart. They are normally dressed in all red.

Siblings Caleb and Beatrice turned 16 last month. Their father is one of their home faction’s leaders. They are currently members of the faction Abnegation. Caleb and Beatrice have to take an aptitude test to determine which faction they will belong to. The aptitude test was developed by the Erudites. During the test, the kids are injected with a serum and are judged based on their reactions. When Beatrice finds out she is a Divergent (she has three factions to choose from) the information may kill her if anyone finds out. She can choose from Dauntless, Abnegation, or Erudite. They are not allowed to share their results until the day of the Choosing Ceremony. They are selfless and kind and are often shunned at school. The reason why is because their faction requires it. There are five factions: Abnegation: The Selfless, Dauntless: The Brave. Amity: The Peaceful, Candor: The Honest, and Erudite: The Intelligent. Abnegation and Erudite are in a sort of Silent War. Erudite stole information from Abnegation which was supposed to be locked up for more than twenty years. With this information Erudite is brainwashing and controlling other people. At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice chooses the Dauntless Faction and Caleb chooses the Erudites, becoming a traitor to his home faction. When Beatrice survives the Dauntless Initiation, she becomes a Dauntless and changes her name to Tris. She has tough times ahead of her and has to watch out for those who may be dangerous to her and her faction. This decision will change her entire life…

I would recommend this brilliant novel to anyone who liked the Hunger Games series or read the Mortal Instruments series. It is a fascinating novel and one of the best I have ever read!

Everything about this book is perfect. The characters, style, plot. Tris isn't like Katniss. And Four isn't like Peeta or Gale. Divergent is not The Hunger Games. Divergent is it's own story and enjoyable for everyone, even those who ddn't like the Hunger Games.

This book was amazing! This book was on my to-read this for a while but just didn't have the time, but we had to read this book for english class and it finally forced me to read it. Thank You teacher. If it wouldn't have been for my english class it would probably still have been on my to-read list! This world the Veronica Roth had created is amazing! In this dystopian world you're put into a faction which kinda represents you in a way. Tris's character is very strong. Her trails to become a dauntless were amazing! Four! Four is like the best. I highly recommend this book. Its amazing I LOVED it
Good Points

This is a really really great book.
Beatrice Prior is living in a dystopian world where her 'country' is split into 5 'factions' that each value one moral (peacefulness, braveness, intelligence...) and on your sixteenth birthday you take this test (the aptitude test) which sorts you into one of the five factions, and then the next day you choose which faction you wish to go in.
But Beatrice has aptitude for 3 factions.
Which is unheard of, and is called being Divergent.
Other Divergents have been shot and killed.
And so all hell breaks loose.
It was action packed, romancey, and philosophical. Such a great novel from a really talented new voice.
Good Points
The premise/world building, and action.

I like big books, y’all. Big, thick hardbacks or paperbacks with lots of adjectives and page turning twists. So how could I pass up Divergent?

Divergent is chockablock full of excitement. Everything is constantly a rush of anticipation at what Tris/Beatrice would get herself into next. Or where Four/Tobias would lead her. Or if and when the factions would revolt.

I’ve grown to love Dystopian books. Especially ones where the community is set up into smaller communities run by some deranged government. It’s the factions that pulled me in here. Each equipped with its own special trait of choice. I’m very interested to see where the next books take us.

Now, Four. I’m finding it hard to find any fault in him. He was simply charming. Equal parts kick ass hero and delightfully adorable normal guy.

Just about every other supporting character was great. All with their own quirks. Interested to see what Christina will do in the next one!

First off, I have to commend Veronica Roth on going as intense and as dark as she did. Often times, I feel like authors want to write a truly gripping novel, but often back down from fully committing out of fear of retaliation from the readers. However, Roth sticks you on this roller-coaster from the very beginning, straps you in, sets the speed to keep-your-heart-lodged-in-your-throat-and-your-stomach-at-your-toes, and you just pray you make it to the finish line unscathed.

Beatrice (Tris) Prior is a sixteen year old girl on the cusp of making the biggest decision of her life. In a dystopian setting, what we now know is Chicago has been divided into five factions. These sectors are divided into the cultivation of certain virtues- Abnegation(the selfless), Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the fearless), and Amity (the peaceful). Brought up in the faction of her parents, Abnegation, Tris can either choose to stay there or risk never seeing her loved ones again and pick another place and lifestyle to call her own.

The thing that I truly loved about this book is the right of choice. In most books of this particular genre, it always seems like the main character's life has been predetermined for them. The adversary tells them what to wear, who to love, where to live, and how to live. This isn't the case in "Divergent." Each sixteen year old is given an aptitude test to help them understand which faction is better suited to their personality, but the ultimate decision is up to them. Just as Beatrice says, "The tests don't have to change our choices."

This story is basically the grueling initiation process of where Tris decides she wants to be. It's the growth of her character as her mind, body, and spirit are put to the test time and time again. I felt invested in her storyline, her life, and her survival as well as those around her. Her overall characterization was refreshing and likable. I adored her sarcasm and strength, as well as her determination to prove to herself that she may look weak, but she's not.

As far as the secondary characters, I loved many and loathed a few. I actually really appreciated the diversity because at least I had an opinion of them at all. All the characters felt necessary and three-dimensional, thus adding to the depth of the plot and my investment in the story. Then, there's Four. He's the mysterious, swoon-inducing yet often times frustrating and indifferent male lead. There's not much I can say without spoilage, but just know that he made me weak in the knees and every single touch made me a shivering, flailing mess.

This is one that I would buy and reread multiple times. I absolutely can not wait to read the rest in the series, and I have good faith that they'll be just as good, if not better.

Veronica Roth, you rock my socks!
Good Points
Four, that is all!
