The author of At the Pond and In the Woods takes readers to the most remote regions of our planet in this beautifully illustrated poetic ode to the creatures that inhabit the North and South poles.

The stark, cold landscapes of Earth’s poles may seem inhospitable, but their snowy hollows and glacial waters hide an astounding variety of creatures, from the tiny, fascinating tardigrade to the mysterious giant squid, from the fleet-footed Arctic hare to the majestic polar bear. Perfectly adapted for the climes they call home, these animals defy logic and invite awe. New York Times best-selling author David Elliott turns his eye—and his pen—to the Arctic and Antarctic with lively poems filled with humor, admiration, and love, while illustrator Ellen Rooney’s vivid multimedia art brings touches of warmth and beauty to the austere landscapes of the poles. Complete with notes on each animal in the back matter, At the Poles speaks to the preciousness of lifeat the ends of the Earth.

At the Poles was an ode to wildlife in the Arctic through poetry. I loved the higher-level vocabulary used as much as the descriptions of the animals. This book would fit well on a writing unit for animal research and poetry. It would be excellent to comb through for words to use in a unit of vocabulary study in the upper Elementary grades. The backmatter gave a more traditional style of facts for follow-up or if the poem was unclear to younger readers. The illustrative style went well with the whimsical poetic words. Overall, this is a great book for readers who like artic animals, and poetry, and works well for several curriculum objectives with writing and vocabulary acquisition.

My son (6) loved this book of poetry.

At the Poles is a poetry book filled with pages of prose, each featuring a different animal found in the polar regions.

I love how the author includes a wide variety of creatures, from the biggest (orca) to the smallest (krill or tardigrade).
The text is positioned just right for its subject matter; while my son loved this, I found it a bit difficult and annoying to read - looking at you Arctic Shag!

The poems themselves are slightly educational, some more so than others. Some poems are happy, while others sad.
The backmatter is full of information on each animal featured in At the Poles,

The textured illustrations are lovely. Having never been to the polar regions, I couldn't tell you how exact and life like they are, but I feel each one represents the mostly frozen tundra I've seen depicted in other media.
