Today we’re excited to chat with Joan Trumpauer Mulholland,

the inspiration behind She Stood For Freedom

Below you’ll find more about Joan’s personal experience with segregation,

and the book that tells her storyplus a giveaway!

She Stood For Freedom is the story of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland as she joins the Civil Rights Movement to help change the injustice that segregation brought to the United States. Joan was involved in several historically significant events during the time of segregation such as :

The Freedom Rides of 1961

The Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-ins in Jackson, MS ~ 1963

The March on Washington with Dr Martin Luther King ~ 1963

The Selma to Montgomery March ~ 1965

She Stood For Freedom is written and told by Joan’s son, Loki Mulholland, Loki writes about his mother’s experiences and how her life was completely changed when she decided to take a stand for what she believed in. Loki tells his mother’s story through letters, photos, newspaper clippings, art work, and her own words.

During the phone interview with Joan it was very clear how much passion Joan had and still has for the cause. Joan describes The Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-in at Jackson Mississippi as one of the most inspirational events that she experienced during the Civil Rights Movement era. Joan talks in detail about her experience during that day and how the events of the day have affected her for the rest of her life.

Joan states that during the events that took place on that day she remembered telling herself:

“Anyone can make a difference. It doesn’t matter how old or young you are. Find a problem, get some friends together, and go fix it.

Remember, you don’t have to change the world….just change your world.”

There are images of original newspaper clippings, photos, and documents all throughout the book that really reflect the truth behind what really happened during the Civil Rights Movement and the experiences that Joan went through during her struggle to help bring segregation to an end.

Just getting to talk with Joan and to hear her retell her life story was truly eye-opening and with each unique story that Joan describes..you can still hear the power in her voice and the passion she feels for her story and her experiences.

Loki, when did you first realize that your mom was so involved in the civil rights movement, and how, if at all did it affect your opinion of her.

With all the turmoil going on now this sounds like such a inspiring read!

And I love the collage art on the cover!

I would like to know what was the catalyst to Loki feeling like this story needed to be told? Did something occur, was it a conversation, and what made her decide this needs to be a book as well?

  4. Anonymous says:

After researching her life, would you be able to do the same thing or act like she did for a racism/religious rights movement?

Who do you think is the greatest civil leader today? What subject do you think should be talked about more
