How can a fairy's blessing be such a curse?

At her birth, Ella of Frell was the unfortunate recipient of a foolish fairy's gift -- the "gift' of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day and a half, or chopping off her own head But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse -- once and for all.

In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as "Catherine, Called Birdy" and as richly poignant as "Beauty," and has all the marks of a classic in the making.

An altered version of the classic Cinderella fairy-tale, Ella Enchanted is a marvelous book! Filled with well-written characters, places, and a good drawn-out timeline of her life, this is a must-read book for everyone! I have read this book so many times that the crease on the side is enormous!! I love how it really digs into her emotions, as well as how she deals with each situation and the "gift" that has been given to her. I have seen the movie version of this book, and although it is a good movie and is accurate in certain parts, it seems that they are two entirely different things. I highly recommend reading the book if you have only just seen the movie, because it is SOO much better, and I promise! You won't be dissapointed.

A cute youth fantasy / fairytale story. Ella was enchanted by a fairy at birth - cursed is more like it. She HAS TO obey any and every command she is given. Her mother tries to shield her but after she dies, Ella is at the mercy of her selfish father. The ending very much reads like Cinderella  - with the glass slipper, fairy godmother, and pumpkin coach with mice horses. I would have liked more originality - considering how Ella herself was so unique. The extra fairy tale creatures were a nice touch. All in all - I really liked this story. 4 stars.

Being obedient isn't fun, but for Ella its a curse. She doesn't have a choice, she must obey any command. When her mother dies, and her father comes back to live with her, things aren't looking so great. Especially when he marries Dame Olga, and Ella receives two stepsisters, Hattie and Olive. When the girls are sent to finishing school, Ella's life is miserable, but at least she finds a friend.

But of course, everything seems to happen when Prince Char is around. I loved it whenever Char and Ella would interact. Char would relax, and Ella kept falling in love. I hated how Ella couldn't just come clean at the balls, tell Char it was her, but the ending was satisfying. It was great to see that her love for Char and protecting him was the one thing that could break the curse, and set her free.

Ella is easy to relate to, she's smart, friendly and witty. She's a great character to follow. Levine's novel is enchanting.

This was one of the best books i've ever read! It teaches you that you are strong enough to overcome even the most difficult obstacle in your path. . Ella broke the obedience curse and helped herself realize that she was stronger than she thought and that to love somebody else first you have to love yourself.

This book was good and fun to read but was not impressive.  Princess books fill the YA sections of library and I have read many of them.  I would sugggest you reading a different one first.  But if you run out of princess books this one isnt  bad read.

Ella Enchanted is a great fairy tale story. What I liked about this book is that they put alitttle bit of every classic fairy tale in this book like Cinderella and Snow White. This book is a bout a girl who has to take commands from people, she was cursed when  she was a baby. But if someone asks her if she wants to do something then it's her choice. She also meets this prince who really likes her. She also has two evil step sisters that boss her around all the time. Her step mom is also mean too. She doesn't know untill later that her close friend is her fairy godmother. It's a pretty awsome book, I would recommend it to everyone. That's why I give it a 5.

This book is considered to be one of Levine's best and I liked it, yet in my opinion there are a few faults in here. First of all, I was kind of upset with the names. For example, the name Peter is so commonly used in thousands of novels that I think I might explode. Since my name is hardly even thought of, I feel kind of bad. Eleanor is used most frequently to name mothers, and I think that when it comes to fiction, there should be more young girls who are named Eleanor, not mothers. And the name Lucinda is often used to describe a wicked lady. There should be more nice women and girls named Lucinda who are considered to be good guys.

I really enjoyed reading "Enchanted." It is a fairytale that mixes courage, determination, love, hope, and a bit of that fairytale magic into the plot. It is humorous and was fun to read!

A little bit after Ella was born, she was granted a wish. It was intended to be good, at least the wish giver thought it would, but the gift turned out to give Ella a lot of troubles. You see, the gift was of making Ella do whatever she was told. Now, Ella finds out she needs to figure out a way to break the spell. Will she be able to find out in time? Or will it be to late? Find out in this wonderful story!

This was one of the first books that I read and liked. A tale of a young woman with ambition, but a curse against her; loves a prince and has an evil stepmother and step sisters. This is a classic cinderella stroy with a few twists. This is an amazing read for any young girl.
