With her best friend’s help, can mermaid Shona get up the nerve to share her singing talents at school? A new reader for younger fans based on the New York Times best-selling Emily Windsnap novels.

Emily Windsnap’s best friend, Shona Silkfin, is a mermaid who loves to sing . . . but only when she is by herself. So when Shiprock School announces a talent show whose winner will have the honor of meeting King Neptune, everyone is excited to perform—except Shona, who is too nervous to sign up. But when Emily overhears her friend singing, she’s amazed by Shona’s beautiful voice. With Emily’s encouragement, Shona decides to enter the talent show—and when she anxiously takes the stage, Shona knows that her best friend is cheering her on, giving her the courage to sing loud and proud in front of everyone, even the King of the Oceans. Based on the New York Times best-selling series by Liz Kessler, this underwater adventure offers a sweet story about a confidence-bolstering friendship to new readers.

Shona loves to sing and it's a secret talent that she possesses. The only problem is that she's terrified to sing in front of others because she fears they'll make fun of her. When her school posts information about a talent show, Shona wants to win the prize which is to meet King Neptune. However, even that isn't enough to convince her to sing in front of her peers. One day, while Shona combs her hair, her best friend Emily Windsnap catches her singing. With Emily's encouragement, Shona braves the task of singing in front of her school, but is it enough to win?

SHONA FINDS HER VOICE is a story about friendship and finding your inner courage to overcome your fears. The mermaid theme will appeal to children and the vibrant illustrations almost seem magical by themselves. I love how Emily is the one to convince Shona to share her talent and the use of their famous word "swishy". The other stories in this series are a bit longer, so it's nice to see something aimed at younger audiences too.

Final Verdict: Overall, it's a cute story with a magical best friend theme. Emily Windsnap fans won't want to miss this spinoff. It's an easy read for younger readers who love mermaids with its simple words and shorter sentence structure.
