Sleepy Sheepy is so excited to spend the night with his grandparents for the first time while his parents go out. He packs his bags, and is glad to see some of his favorite people! He tries on the purple rabbit outfit that grandma is knitting and admires his grandfather's international potato collection, but feels homesick. His grandparents know just what to do, and bake cookies and dance to some records to distract the sad Sheepy. It works, and before long, Sheepy feels comfortable with all of the bedtime rituals, even if they are a little different and involve scratchy blankets and mismatched pajamas.

Good Points

Sleepy Sheepy is a bit contrary in his outlook (in the first book, he can't fall asleep), but he is open to change. This is a good message to children who are experiencing new things for the first time and having difficulty with changing gears. Books are a great way to set the groundwork for these firsts; I'd love to see Sheepy go to the dentist!

Oswald's illustrations are very clever; the blow dried sheep is fantastic! The picture of Sheepy in his grandmother pink, handknitted bunny suit is hysterical. There are lots of fun things in the picture details as well, like Goodnight Moooo'n and Grandpa's potato collection with little flags from other countried. I was a little distracted by the sheep's faces, but if Marc Brown's Arthur can have an aardvark without the long snout, I think Sheepy is fine.

Grandparents often host a child's first sleepover, so this is a great companion to Dewdney's Llama Llama Gram and Grandpa, or Averiss' Sorrel and the Sleepover. There are a growing number of books about children and grandparents spending the day together, like Toht's fantastic Together with You, so this is a great choice for several different content areas.
