SET SAIL FOR PANCAKES is a charming story about family, food, and adventure. Margot wakes up one morning hungry for pancakes. However, they don't have any eggs, milk, or flour. Since they live on an island, they must set sail to other islands to get the things they need. They stop at Chicken Island and collect the eggs they need before leaving coins in the jar, and they do the same at Cow Island. On the way to Flour Mill Island, a storm begins brewing. They manage to get the flour, but the storm worsens. They find a place to anchor, and when the storm clears, they find out they are at Banana Tree Island - and now they can make excellent banana pancakes.

What I loved: This was such a fun story that introduces where food comes from with the setting of family and the sea. The relationship between Margot and her grandfather is lovely and particularly shines amidst the fears of the storm when he manages to comfort her with fun games. The story is just the right length, with plenty of magic and great for young readers. The artwork adds to the whimsy of the story, capturing their journey well. The story includes humorous moments as well as the mildly scary moments of enduring the storm, something children will recognize from their own encounters with thunderstorms.

The font is clear throughout with strategic color changes to make it easily readable even in low light, such as at bedtime. The amount of text is great for toddlers and preschoolers with pages turning relatively quickly but still telling a story they can get into.

Final verdict: A charming picture book, SET SAIL FOR PANCAKES is a delightful read about food, family, and adventure. Highly recommend for toddlers and preschoolers.
