A mermaid and a pirate build a friendship through kindness, empathy, and shared adventure in this heartwarming picture book by New York Times bestselling author Tracey Baptiste, with bright, bold illustrations by Leisl Adams.

Glub glub…

Aargh...

Mermaid and Pirate cannot understand each other. They speak different languages and come from different worlds. But they’re quick to lend a hand, or a tail, when the sky grows stormy and waters get rough, and a friendship is born. Sometimes kindness and generosity speak louder than words.

When a mermaid and a pirate cross paths, they struggle to communicate because they speak two different languages. They meet by chance during a storm when the mermaid tries to help the pirate, but finds herself trapped instead. The two work together so each of them end up safe in the end, and even though they don't understand each other's words, they connect through their emotions to form a bond.

MERMAID AND PIRATE is a children's picture book that explores empathy and connecting with people who may not speak the same language. The illustrations are vibrant and it's easy to see what emotion each character is feeling. Instead of language, the pirate says "Arrgh" and the mermaid says things like "glub glub" and these sounds effects make the story more engaging for younger children.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to children who love mermaids and pirates and who are also learning about emotions. This may help them understand their own feelings and discover what empathy is.

MERMAID AND PIRATE is a cute, simple picture book about connecting with others, even when you don't speak the same language. A mermaid and pirate have a chance meeting and build a friendship through shared experience and helping each other, even though they have no idea what the other one is trying to say.

What I loved: The illustrations here are quite lovely, capturing the emotions of the mermaid and pirate well, and showing all the things we can share and communicate, even without words. The pages are full of color and fun ocean details. The story line is simple, but it gets the message across with some sounds for what they hear from each other that little ones may get into.

The font is easy to read throughout, and the story moves quickly, which will work well for a variety of ages. I would recommend this for preschoolers and up, as they will understand the messaging a bit better, but toddlers would likely enjoy this story too.

Final verdict: MERMAID AND PIRATE is a sweet picture book about making new friends and connections, even when you speak different languages.
