Or that they need lots of flowers, water, and a dry place to live? Through Lucy Cousins's familiar bold, inviting artwork and cheery narration, the youngest children can join Maisy as she tends to her growing garden and discovers some fun and informative things about the bees that live there. MAISY LOVES BEES is a charming board book that teaches little ones about bees. This book poses and answers a series of questions about bees, giving basic facts and information along the way. On one side of each spread, there is key information about what bees are, what they eat, where they live, and more. On the other side, Maisy is interacting with bees and their environment, providing a light story along the way.

What I loved: This book uses high-contrast images and simple sentences to teach little ones about bees. There is a lot of information in a relatively short book, so there is a lot for young readers to learn. The inclusion of a story with Maisy related to the facts presented along the way give children something to understand further and pull them in to the story. Repetitive/familiar characters are a great way for little ones to learn and build upon what they know, and Maisy is a great choice for the youngest of readers with simple sentences and brightly colored illustrations.

The end of the book also includes a fold-out page with some of Maisy's friends for additional fun and a nice touch. The information is good and approachable along the way, which works well for little ones. A clear, bold font makes this easy to read aloud as well. Given the length on each page spread and the level of information, this will work well for toddlers and young preschoolers.

Final verdict: MAISY LOVES BEES is a delightful board book that teaches little ones about bees and the world around them using simple facts and brightly colored, contrasting images. Recommend for toddlers and preschoolers.
