From Newbery Medal-winning author Matt de la Peña and bestselling illustrator Loren Long comes a story about the strongest bond there is and the diverse and powerful ways it connects us all.

"In the beginning there is light and two wide-eyed figures standing near the foot of your bed and the sound of their voices is love. ... A cab driver plays love softly on his radio while you bounce in back with the bumps of the city and everything smells new, and it smells like life."

In this heartfelt celebration of love, Newbery Medal-winning author Matt de la Peña and bestselling illustrator Loren Long depict the many ways we experience this universal bond, which carries us from the day we are born throughout the years of our childhood and beyond. With a lyrical text that's soothing and inspiring, this tender tale is a needed comfort and a new classic that will resonate with readers of every age.

What worked: Eloquent, lyrical portrayals of different types of love told from a child's perspective. The illustrations add to the heartfelt ways love can be shown through times of laughter to even darkness.

I loved the diversity in this picture book that starts with an infant's description of love being the light of two wide-eyed figures at the foot of his/her bed. Then readers see love shown through smells, sounds, and even the night sky's light.

The author doesn't stop at the good time either but shows that love can be shown during bad times too. The message is strong that love can be found within family, loved ones, and can even be shown by the stranger playing a soulful song outside the subway station. Plus, love can be seen in the bathroom mirror.

As a former bilingual first-grade teacher I feel this book would be perfect to read during February's theme of love. What's perfect about it is it shows diverse characters that are sure to mirror students' own experiences.

Great rhythm throughout with illustrations that give this moving picture book its own special light. Highly recommend.
