I found this a fascinating read. I wasn't sure at first if the style was deliberately classic, but as I read past the opening prologue and into the first few chapters, I realized there was a definite classic feel to this easy to read narrative. In my mind it brought back memories of Huckleberry Finn and other classics in the way this story is told. In an age dominated by grotesque zombies, vampire love triangles and werewolves, this is a welcome change and a rewarding read. Even though it is aimed at young readers aged from about 8 years, as an adult I was captivated by this book. As the story progresses, the themes become deeper and more meaningful and the author handles subjects like death and hardship with great sensitivity and care. Readers will be surprised by the ending, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I highly recommend it to all ages.
