Jojo lives between two cultures and is learning about both. His Lola teaches the Philippine dance, the Tinikling in America and he is learning. The illustrations do a fantastic job putting into motion the rhythmic and vibrant dance on nonmoving paper. The rich colors used are engaging. The simple sentence structure makes this ideal for younger readers. The author compares being from two cultures to feeling like dancing between two worlds and I am sure that will resonate with other people. The Author’s note at the end gave the history of the Tinikling and it was interesting how its roots in cruelty evolved into such a joyful dance.
