Chasing TIme (Adrielle Maddox Book 1)

What seventeen-year-old Adrielle Maddox wants most in life
is to fit in. But she’s a strikingly beautiful Albino, a foster
child whose mother died in a suspicious fire. Dumped by her boyfriend on her birthday eve, Adrielle wishes her life were different. Then Coco, her sister, gives her a broken watch once belonging to their mother.

Coco drags Adrielle to a party where they join their besties. Adrielle has an encounter with an ancient immortal, Domenikos, who has captured her boyfriend. He demands her watch in exchange for his life

Before she can react, Adrielle’s broken watch starts ticking seconds before midnight. Earsplitting gongs shake the room. Domenikos slashes her boyfriend’s throat and vanishes. Then Monika, an old seer with diamond scepter, appears.

She hands Adrielle a mysterious journal dated 241 BCE, and when Adrielle starts to read, its empowering words spur a rush of memories. Monika divulges: Adrielle is from another epoch. Her birthmark is the mark of the traveller. Her watch is a unique time-travelling device.

Hope surges through Adrielle. Could this be her chance for a do-over? Can she find out who
she really is and change her life? So she doesn’t have to be the outsider? Monika sees Adrielle’s hunger for change and warns her of the time travel paradox. Even with the warning, Adrielle is determined to find her true self and travels back in time as a spunky warrior locked in a high- stake cat-and-mouse game with her nemesis, Domenikos.

I book I would buy for a young teen that likes a little sophistication, a good love story and an exciting adventure!
Good Points
Well written with an interesting plot line that keeps you guessing and engaged! Characters are stong and the plot keeps moving. Imaginative use of historical elements. I wanted to keep reading to see where the adventure would take me.

I was impressed by the fact the author was able to avoid the use of vulgar language in the midst of her exciting and often dangerous story … rare, indeed, in this day and age … opting instead for hip, yet G-rated exclamations, adding to the charm and authenticity of her story. The novel is a testament to her commitment to creating a positive contribution to the literary world of YA fiction. In conclusion, "Chasing Time" is a refreshing and positive story of love, discovery and triumph.
Good Points
The novel features a diverse cast of characters who each bring their unique personality and perspective to the story. Wakefield's four primary sidekicks to her main character, Adrielle, include different mixtures of economic backgrounds, heritage, race and gender, thus providing a refreshing and inclusive portrayal of and for young adults. The author's respectful attitude towards the LBGTQ+ community is also up-front through her inclusion of one of her four main characters, and perhaps her most likeable, ‘Dave.’ Adrielle herself, being an albino teenager, is unique in this genre. History, setting and time travel are all handled in a way totally accessible to her YA audience. Through her approach to character development and use of language, Wakefield creates a relatable and inclusive story that promotes acceptance, respect and diversity, while not sacrificing adventure and intrigue mixed-in with a whole lot of fun.
