Byrd and Igloo: A Polar Adventure

Told from the perspective of the companion of explorer Richard Byrd, a little stray named Igloo, this book outlines some of Byrd's incredible feats of aviation and discovery, from the North Pole to the South Pole and in between, which took place over 80 years ago. As Igloo accompanies him on his expeditions, the man and his dog develop a strong bond. The stories told inspire a sense of awe and wonder at Richard Byrd's history-changing accomplishments and strong leadership.

Although I found the fictional perspective of Igloo juvenile at times, overall, I felt it was an interesting way to tell this story that could draw in younger children, especially boys. Any child who loves dogs would probably find his part in the story funny and endearing. And I definitely think boys who are not interested in reading could see value and be drawn into a book like this--I wish there were more books like this for boys, honestly. My husband was not really interested in reading when he was younger, and in his adult life I have discovered he loves reading about stories of survival and exploration. So if you haven't found your son's reading 'niche,' this may be it! As a girl, I think I would have thoroughly enjoyed learning this history when I was young. I didn't know about Richard Byrd, and reading about him as an adult was enlightening and fun; I am going to check out more of his story from the library. I am so glad I read this and I am excited to learn more!
