Stretchy leggings on? Ballet shoes in the bag? Let’s go! Join Thomas and his fellow dancers as they’re welcomed into the studio for their Saturday ballet class. There are feet positions to perfect and steps to learn—first position, plie, up on your toes, relevé—and turns and jumps, too. Everyone is getting ready for their first performance, The Nutcracker—and now it’s time to pick out costumes! This warm celebration of dancing, a companion to Holly Sterling’s Karate Kids, is inspired by the author’s time learning ballet as a young child. It’s sure to be a hit with little ones taking a class, free-form dancers at home, and those who are hoping to be a ballet kid one day, too.

BALLET KIDS is a sweet picture book about the love of ballet and embracing your own style. Thomas is a ballet kid, and the story follows him as he gets ready and attends his ballet class. With his friends, they stretch and warm up, going into some of the positions before practicing their jumps. They then get to pick their Nutcracker costumes for their recital. Thomas picks the pretty purple costume of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and they all perform together onstage for a magical night.
What I loved: This was such a sweet story about a love of ballet. Thomas has clearly found his passion, and the reader gets to follow along as he and his friends practice their moves and get ready for the recital. He remains true to himself and picks the costume he likes with plenty of joy during the recital and after when he declares it a magical night. The book includes ballet terms throughout with some simple steps drawn on the endpages for those who want to practice at home.
The illustrations are lovely, with plenty of color. They really bring the characters and their personalities to life with plenty of adorable scenes. The story really embraces all children as they are without expectations, and the words focus on Thomas and his love of ballet. This is a very uplifting and cozy story that celebrates the joy of dance.
Final verdict: BALLET KIDS is a sweet picture book that celebrates all the magic of ballet through one young boy's story. This will work well for toddlers and preschoolers who will enjoy the lush illustrations and simple phrasing.
