Kid Review: Bedtime for Ducking: A Peek-Through Storybook by Amelia Hepworth

About This Book:

In this sweet story with both illustrated and photographic elements, as well as peek-through pages throughout, Duckling is looking for a new place to sleep—but will she find anywhere that’s as comfortable as her own nest?

It’s bedtime, but Duckling doesn’t want to sleep in her usual bed; she wants to find a new place to sleep! She sees Fox in a den, but it’s too dark and muddy in there. She wants to sleep in the log next to Frog, but the log is too cold and wet. Next, Duckling scrambles up the tree to see if she might like to stay with Owl, but she’s too high up, and she feels dizzy. Soon, she hears quacking and finds Mommy Duck and the rest of the ducklings behind the reeds, and she realizes that her cozy nest is the best place to sleep.

sweet board book, perfect for bedtime

BEDTIME FOR DUCKLING is an adorable board book that teaches about animal homes with a sweet story of duckling searching for a place to sleep. Duckling first asks Fox if she can sleep in his den, but it does not quite feel right. She then checks out Frog’s hollow log before trying Owl’s cozy hole in a tree. None of these are just right, but then Duckling goes home to her mother and finds the perfect place to sleep. The book features colorful settings with photographs of real animals throughout.

What I loved: This was a simple but sweet story that is perfect for bedtime with the ultimate leading to a place to sleep for Duckling. The peek-throughs are set up just right so that Duckling can peer into each of the animal homes and then fit within it to see whether they will be a good place for her to sleep. This also contains some simple, early lessons about animal homes with the various animals. The colorful, full page illustrations feature lots of fun details and the real photographs of each of the animals throughout will appeal to young readers.

The text is large and clear throughout, making it easy to read aloud. The sturdy board book pages will be easy for young fingers to turn, and the peek-throughs work for both before and after they are turned. This is perfect for infants and young toddlers, especially as a bedtime pick.

Final verdict: BEDTIME FOR DUCKLING is a sweet and simple board book about animal homes and finding the perfect place to rest your head.
