Hi, YABCers!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the new cover reveal for PHANTOM LIMBS by Paula Garner, releasing September 13, 2016 from Candlewick Press. Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from Paula:

PHANTOM LIMBS has a new cover, and as you can see, it is gorgeous. It was important to have a working image for the purpose of the ARC cover and catalog to meet Fall marketing and publication deadlines, but we ultimately decided to take the cover design in a different direction. I’m really excited about the bold, graphic treatment that designer Matt Roeser created for the final book, and the nod to water, sadness, and love that he captured.

About the Book

Otis and Meg were inseparable until her family abruptly moved away after the terrible accident that left Otis’s little brother dead and both of their families changed forever. Since then, it’s been three years of radio silence, during which time Otis has become the unlikely protégé of eighteen-year-old Dara—part drill sergeant, part friend—who’s hell-bent on transforming Otis into the Olympic swimmer she can no longer be. But when Otis learns that Meg is coming back to town, he must face some difficult truths about the girl he’s never forgotten and the brother he’s never stopped grieving. As it becomes achingly clear that he and Meg are not the same people they were, Otis must decide what to hold on to and what to leave behind. Quietly affecting, this compulsively readable debut novel captures all the confusion, heartbreak, and fragile hope of three teens struggling to accept profound absences in their lives.

How do you move on from an irreplaceable loss? In a poignant debut, a sixteen-year-old boy must learn to swim against an undercurrent of grief—or be swept away by it.

I love the real depth of issues presented. I find that a lot of novels published by Candlewick feature great writers who have no appetite for cliche or a predilection to focus on plot at the expense of thematic exposition. I think I’d really enjoy this read. Thanks for enlightening me about it…BTW, I find the cover totally unmemorable, but I don’t think that’s any real problem. Cheers, Kara S

I’m a huge fan of book covers that use minimalism and hand-drawn -looking illustrations. Just reading the synopsis made my eyes water. Seems like the kind of book that tugs at your heart strings with a very emotionally intricate plot.

I love how recently there has been many new story lines compared to the same old contemporary plot lines, and this one is no different then the many other new plots. Just by reading the synopsis has made me want to read the rest of it. I also adore the cover of the book, I have a thing for bright and colorful eye catching covers and sometimes even just buy them since their pretty. But my favorite part is how two of the drops on the cover make a heart in the lower right corner above the authors name. That’s a really cute little detail.
