YA Featured Review: Last Violent Call: A Foul Thing; This Foul Murder (Chloe Gong)

About This Book:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Chloe Gong comes two captivating new novellas surrounding the events of Foul Lady Fortune and following a familiar cast of characters from the These Violent Delights Duet!

In A Foul Thing, Roma and Juliette have established themselves as the heads of an underground weapons ring in Zhouzhuang, making a living the way they do best while remaining anonymous in their peaceful, quiet life. In This Foul Murder, Benedikt and Marshall have been summoned by Roma to find the elusive scientist, Lourens, and bring him to Zhouzhuang. LAST VIOLENT CALL features two short stories with some of our favorite characters from THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS. The stories take place after the crazy events of both OUR VIOLENT ENDS and FOUL LADY FORTUNE. It gets me even more excited for Chloe’s newest book FOUL HEART HUNTSMAN. I definitely recommend reading all three of those books before reading these.

Warning: this review may contain spoilers for those who haven’t read the series first.

The first story I read is A FOUL THING that stars our favorite star-crossed couple: Roma and Juliette. Surprise, they survived the explosion and I couldn’t be happier. While A tragic ending is much more dramatic, I adore the two so much that I wanted more and Chloe Gong delivers. When a boy named Yulun asks them for help to save the girl he loves, Roma and Juliette find themselves back doing what they’re good at: solving crimes and being the leaders they were born to be. They also find traces of their past and have to decide if they should keep their peace or help their family.

I must say that I love seeing Roma and Juliette domesticated and it’s exactly how I would have imagined it. Their love is unlike anything else and while Juliette still likes to pick fights, Roma prefers to show her how much he cares for her instead of taking the bait. He is so sweet and I adore seeing more of this side of him. It’s definitely nicer seeing them work as a team because they are a formidable duo. Even though they try to enjoy their peace, it hasn’t made them complacent. They’re ready for a fight when one comes their way.

The second short story is THIS FOUL MURDER and it features my other two favorite characters from THESE VIOLENT DELIGHTS: Marshall and Benedikt. The two find themselves on a train, trying to help Roma and Juliette. After someone is murdered on the train, Marshall and Benedikt take it upon themselves to solve the crime since they don’t have the time to stop and wait for police to do it. After all, thanks to their past they’re experts when it comes to all things murder.

This story definitely feels like I’ve fallen into another Agatha book like MURDER ON ORIENT EXPRESS. The only difference is I have my favorite characters to fall in love with all over again. I love how even though the four of them all have their own things going on, they’re ready to drop everything to help each other. That’s true family.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of Chloe Gong’s other words. And if you haven’t read them and a read a fan of Romeo and Juliet inspired stories with a fantasy twist, you should definitely pick them up. It’s so nice seeing these domesticated side to our deadly characters.
