Wicked Lovely is a great urban fantasy tale that I fell in love with. The story is of
Aislinn, a girl who has the Sight, meaning she can see faeries. But
these aren't the cute fairies you see in stories - these are dangerous,
and if they ever found out that that Aislinn could see them, she would
be in serious trouble. To only add to her trouble, a faerie from the
faerie court seems to be pursuing her, but she doesn't know why.. add
some romantic troubles with her friend (who she wants to be more with)
Seth, and you've got yourself a yummy novel with fantasy, love,
betrayal and all that good stuff!

The only other novel I've ever read that was urban fantasy and had faeries was The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint and Valiant by Holly Black, so I wasn't really sure what to expect from Wicked Lovely.
I had only heard good things about it, so I picked up it when the
hardcover went on sale at work. My expectations were kind of high, but
not too much. I don't like to be disapointed (like with Twilight...
ugh.) Well, if it's any indication that I liked it, I managed to finish
this book in one sitting! It really is quite a treat.

The story
is one that will grip you almost right away. It's one where everyone
has difficult choices to make; everyone has something to lose,
whichever choice they make. It gave an interesting spin on things,
which was mostly what kept me reading. I was always wondering what
everyone would do, what choices they'd make and what their consequences
would be. In the end, no one gets everything they want, but it's not a
particularly sad or happy ending either. The love stories were also a
nice breathe of fresh air. While Seth might've been a little too
perfect, it was needed to keep Aislinn away from Keenan (the court
faerie who is pursuing Aislinn), and the pairings seem to go against
the grain. Marr seems to set it up to make it so that it would be more
convenient for certain characters to be together, but it doesn't end up
that way.

The characters were also all pretty great too. Aislinn
is not the typical heroine. While she's tough and can hold her own, she
isn't the annoying "I-can-kick-your-ass" character that seems to
sometimes be prevalent in urban fantasy. Yes, she can hold her own, but
Marr still kept her human and kept her vulnerable, which is where Seth
comes in. Like I mentioned before, while he seems a little too perfect,
he's still a likable character that you want to root for. As for some
of the faeries (more specifically Keenan and Donia), it was cool how
they sometimes seemed almost like an enemy, but we get to see their
side and realize they really aren't at all. They had just as much to
lose as Aislinn and Seth. The only character who I had a problem with
was the Winter Queen. She was a little too cookie-cutter for me as far
as bad guys go. The dynamics between the four main characters though
was great to read.

Overall, if you want some fantasy, but
nothing super genre heavy, Marr is the place to go. A great setting,
great story, great characters.. it's a fun read. I'm almost done Ink
Exchange (the companion novel), and I'm all ready excited for the
sequel, Fragile Eternity, coming out at the end of April! I give
Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely a 4/5 rating.
