Reader reviewed by P. G. Sherrie

Stephanie Meyer's first installment in her Twilight series is a quick and easy read.  The plotline of vampires, high school, and love draw in readers easily. While the novel's plot is intriguing and interesting, the character development is wanting.  All in all, the book is the literary equivalent of a Twinky: sugary, sweet, but ultimately insubstantial.  After finishing the book in only a day, I was left wanting something more, something deeper.  Suspended disbelief is required throughout almost the entire belief not in the aspect of vampires and werewolves, but rather in the characters' actions themselves, as Bella and Edward fall in love in what seems an instant, and what seems more as an infatuation rather than a strong bond of love.
