A school isn’t just a building; it is all the people who work and learn together. It is a place for discovery and asking questions. A place for sharing, for helping, and for community. It is a place of hope and healing, even when that community can’t be together in the same room. John Schu, a librarian and former ambassador of school libraries for Scholastic, crafts a loving letter to schools and the people that make up the communities within in a picture book debut beautifully illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison.

John Schu is a well-known librarian who for years has been promoting books for school-aged children. It seems only fitting that his first book as an author would be a book about a school.
This Is a School is a picture book that familiarizes readers with school and how students learn and grow. The message is that every student and teacher is an important part of the school community. The illustrations are bright and vibrant. I loved all the diversity depicted in this book especially seeing children in wheelchairs.
This Is a School is a wonderful read-aloud for school-aged children and can be used as a tool to help ease fear and anxiety around attending school. I can see teachers reading this book on the first day of school.
