I was hesitant about reading this series as I expected it to be directed too much toward the young. While it is a teen series I did enjoy it. The story line was enough to keep me reading, and I will be reading the rest of the series and see what other trouble Mr. Todd will be getting into.

I really liked the middle of the book, because there was more action then.

I thought that the book was, over all, fantastic. At first, it was a little hard to get into, but near chapter 5, I really got hooked. I love how Mrs. Brewer uses such descriptive adjectives. For example, images of D'ablo's and Vladimir's fight are vivid in my imagination. In the book it said stuff like "His voice was gruff, and sounded as if it hadn't been used recently," and I'm thinking "How does she think of this stuff?"...Well, it didn't say exactly that, but it did say something similar. The only part that I didn't like was how somtimes the text didn't state who was speaking. I mean, you can make inferences, but still.

Put A New Twist On Vampire Lore

Eighth grade bites. Bullies harass him. The girl of his dreams seems to have a thing for his best friend. His favorite teacher, Mr. Craig, just disappears. The principal is keeping a closer than comfortable eye on him. Not to mention hes constantly hungry& for human blood. Vladimir Tod is an orphaned vampire teen whos parents died in a fire three years earlier. Not only is he dealing with teen angst but also the unknown extent of his vampire abilities. Vlad has never really worried about becoming exposed in his little home town, but when a new, odd teacher becomes increasingly inquisitive about Vlad and assigns him an oral report about vampires, Vlad begins to worry. Could this new teacher have something to do with Mr. Craig disappearing? And why does this new teacher seem so set on getting close to Vlad and his Aunt Nelly?

Eighth Grade Bites put a new twist on vampire lore. The author created an interesting main character who was born a vampire, not made. Vlad didnt fall into the temptation of feeding on a human even though their blood was what he thirsted for. He also tried to do what was right. When he did do something wrong he felt terrible and guilty. A vampire with morals.

The mystery of his parents death and his fathers past were both intriguing and suspenseful. I felt a connection with the Vlad because neither I nor him had any idea what happened to his parents or what was in store for him as a vampire. The addition of Otis (the new teacher) into the story was the tipping of the iceberg. Not only was Otis acting strange but he was also threatening at times. He certainly created a more oppressed and chaotic atmosphere.

The ending was a satisfaction. Eighth Grade Bites was extremely like a pilot TV episode. It explored a little into each storyline or character to enable a wide horizon of story plots for future books. I look forward to the next book in the series, Ninth Grade Slays.
