About This Book:

This tender novelty board book shines a light on all the ways a parent’s love for their children grows more and more each day.

My heart used to beat for one,
now it beats for two.
But oh how giant my heart grows
all because of you.

A parent’s love for their child grows daily, always in new and unexpected ways: through making mistakes, through asking why, through taking a stand, through making up your mind. With a die-cut heart that gets bigger and bigger on every spread, each turning page expands the love that’s shared.

Sweet board book about love

MY HEART GROWS is a sweet board book about the love between caregiver and child. In the story, a heart grows when a child enters a life, and it keeps growing as experiences do. Anytime they laugh, anytime they cry, and as they learn, so does the heart grow. The book features die-cut hearts that build upon one another as children read through the book to reveal a multi-layered growing heart by the end.

What I loved: This is a sweet book of all the love shared between caregiver and child, and there are many scenes depicted that will feel familiar. For instance, the book shows the heart growing when a father is doing a young girl’s hair and then also when he misses her as she leaves on the school bus (for together and apart). These scenes are gently depicted throughout alongside the poetic text that captures all the ways that love grows – even when children make mistakes. The die-cut hearts was an interesting touch that reveals the growing heart throughout the story and adding to the theme. Brightly colored illustrations with a child-like whimsy will appeal to young readers.

What left me wanting more: As a small point, the text is a bit awkward in places as the length of the phrasing often changes, so it is hard to get into the rhythm of the read. Additionally, it is almost rhyming throughout with some stretches that are semi-close to a rhyme but not quite spot-on, creating some reading stumbles along the way. Additionally, as a another small thing, with the busy background some of the text can be difficult to read aloud, particularly in low light. I do appreciate that it switches from black to white font on dark backgrounds, however.

Final verdict: MY HEART GROWS is a sweet and whimsical board book read about the love between caregiver and child.
