Starting off with a typical grumpy "morning person," in Hooray for Hat!, we meet many characters who are having a bad day, and need the cheerful encouragement of a friend and the addition of a whimsical hat to their head, to boot. Each character remembers a friend in need, and together they all help one another to a more cheerful day.

The illustrations in this picture book really got me, as it starts off with the gray elephant, waking up to an ill mood in bed. He storms out, angry, when the doorbell rings, only to find a simple blessing on his doorstep. This reminded me of a hilarious time in my past when two of my best friends left something outside my door to cheer me up, when I thought nothing could. The happy colors and interesting hats inside of Elephant's gift instantly lift his mood, and he, like a true friend, shares his joy with others. My girls thought the story was cute and even liked saying with the friends, "Hooray for Hat!" You will too, I'm sure of it.

I read this story for my toddler time kids. It was fantastic. The illustrations are fun and colorful. I love the lesson of helping friends cheer up.
