Author-illustrator Marc Majewski delivers a gorgeously painted, tender story about a young child who loves dressing up as a butterfly. A joyful celebration of creativity, self-expression, and family—perfect for fans of Jessica Love and Beatrice Alemagna.
I am a butterfly.
I spin and swirl, twist and twirl, flutter and flap, and when I open my wings, I fly!
A young child loves the spots and patterns found on butterflies, and fashions bold orange wings to become a butterfly child. But when other kids shun the child for the clothes they don’t understand, it takes a father’s encouragement for the kid to stay true to what they love and find joy in the butterfly wings once more.

When a little boy who loves butterflies dresses up as one, the other children laugh and make fun of him. Feeling both frustrated and embarrassed, the boy discards his costume and gets upset about what the other children are saying. After confessing to his father, his dad helps make him the most stunning butterfly costume and encourages him to do what he loves. Feeling empower, the boy dons his new costume and it's so detailed that the children are awed and no longer want to make fun of him.

BUTTERFLY CHILD teaches children the importance of embracing who you are as a person and doing what you like. The pictures are beautiful with bold colors and it's obvious the illustrator paid close attention to each detail. I love the overall message and how it also encourages children to use their imagination. Most children love animals and pretending to be them, so why should a boy not pretend to be a butterfly if it's what he enjoys?

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to children who love animals and those who have a vivid imagination. It's an uplifting story where a father supports his son without discrimination.
