The Skeleton Tree

by Iain Lawrence

Release Date: 1/5/2016

About the Book

Less than 48 hours after twelve-year-old Chris casts off on a trip to sail down the Alaskan coast with his uncle, their boat sinks. The only survivors are Chris and a boy named Frank, who hates Chris immediately. Chris and Frank have no radio, no flares, no food. Suddenly, they’ve got to find a way to forage, fish, and scavenge supplies from the shore. Chris likes the company of a curious friendly raven more than he likes the prickly Frank. But the boys have to get along if they want to survive.

Because as the days get colder, and the salmon migration ends, survival will take more than sheer force of will. There in the wilderness of Kodiak, they discover a bond they didn’t expect, and through it, the compassion and teamwork that might truly be the path to rescue.

The cover is super cool. Is it intentional that the rock ledge the boys are standing on looks like an eagle’s head, or is it me being imaginative? Anyway, it sounds like an adventurous and exciting book that would be fun and interesting to read.

I love the tie in with the rock outcropping and the raven! My parents lived in Kodiak and this book intrigues me because I love AK! This reminds me of Hatchet, but with company…

I love the cover! I feel like there’s symbolism not even the artist realizes is there

I love the cover, and how the art really suites the title and the sub, “THE SKELETON TREE/ONLY THE WILD SURVIVE.”, which I think is very interesting, and looks catchy. I love all the details in the photo, like the rock that the figures are on is shaped like a crow, I believe. The trees, the fog, the birds, and the sunset fit together with the rest of the cover, the summary, and the title. I think it’s really neat how the figures are in different poses, and there’s a story behind the boy that looks upset as he’s sitting at the edge of the rock, whereas the other figure is standing behind him, as if he isn’t sure how to react to the situation. THE SKELETON TREE seems like a very interesting book, that I look forward to reading!

Based on the thumbnail cover and title, I expected this to be more of a horror story. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, detail, and coloring of the image, and see how the image works well with a survival story.
