Set sometime in the future, Uglies is the story of a young girl who discovers the ugly truth about the futuristic society in which she grew up. This novel causes you to think about what is happening in our society today, and not blindly follow the lead of others, but to question what is percieved as "right" by many. A great book and dramatic ending.

p.s. I also love that the books come out only two months apart and a released in paperback! (finally someone understands the pain of waiting!)

I loved how different this book was to most that I have read. The plot and the story line are good and I really injoyed the characters. The only thing I was disappointed in was the last good was of a different character but I still loved how it fit in the the other books.
Good Points
So unique and different.

I loved this book and cannot wait to finish the wonderful books that come after it. I think Scott Westerfield paints a wonderful picture with all his descriptions. You can imagine very easily what Pretties and Uglies look like. I think that Tally is given a good assignment....to find Shay and the others who disappear before they get the operation. I think that my views kept changing throughout the whole book. I want her to turn them in and then I didn't. I would reccommend anyone who enjoys reading to try this book. It wasnt what i would normally choose but i still loved it!!!

At first I really didnt know what to make of this book. then i understood the concept. I also think that Tally is very vain. I guess it's not totally her fault though. She's constintly reminding herself she's ugly even when David thinks she's beautiful. The book raises lots of questions as to what the future will be like.

Summary: (From Goodreads) Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her licensefor turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty worldand it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

Review:

First let me say that the first time I read the summary I knew I'd love it. I loved how truthful and eye-opening this story was. It awoken me to a strange reality, Uglies made me think. And I love books that make you think. From the first sentence to the last word, Uglies had me hooked. Somewhere near the end though I became a bit bored, it dragged out just a bit, but as the end kept nearing, the story picked right back up again.

Tally was such a real feeling character I was lost for words after I finished it. She's easy to relate to because she feels what practically every girl has felt at some point. That she is ugly. Each character had me smiling, laughing, and cringing. Every chapter flew by in minutes. Everything about Uglies will make you take a step back and go, wow.

The only real problem I had was I didn't feel that strong connection with Tally as I would have if it was in first person. I usually read in first person, but it was different and still rewarding after reading Uglies in third. I recommend that you go and buy (or borrow/check out) and read Uglies as soon as you can.

What would you think if you could live in a world that almost everyone who was past the age of 16 was pretty? In Tally's world, that was what happened. Indulge yourself in this futuristic book where when you are 16 you get an operation that will change your life, for the better, or for the worse.

Tally is excited for the operation. However, her new good friend is not so excited. Her friend escapes to the Smoke and leaves disguised directions for Tally to get her their. When Tally is taken by the "Specials" and is told that she wont be able to turn pretty until she finds her friend and brings her back. If Tally follows through with the plan, she will be betraying not only her friend but the whole community. Will Tally do it, or will she learn what it really means to be pretty? Find out in "Uglies."

Uglies is the story of soon to be sixteen year old Tally who is an "Ugly". In her time and place everyone is born ugly with rare beauties and when an ugly turns sixteen they are given a cosmetic operation that makes them drop dead beautiful. Tally like many other otherUglies aspires to be beautiful and grows more and more envious of New Pretty Town as her operation comes closer. She's never met anyone who's never wanted to be pretty until she meets and befriends Shay. Shay is unpredictable and a nonconformist. She doesn't want to turn pretty she sees it as becoming ugly and brainwashed. It isn't until Shay runs away the eve of her sixteenth birthday and Tally's sixtenth birthday because they share the same birthday that Tally is told that she will not become pretty until she findsHsay and the other Uglies wjho escaped. Tally is forced to mull over the price of friendhsip and the coast of betrayal. Is A Pretty Face worth more than a friend's life, is the question posed in this satircal novel of cosmetic surgery and the "price" perople pay to have "good" looks.
