This book is about a girl named Casie in a little bit after the great depresion. Cassie has to get to school by walking and the whites bus always rolls right next to them eather getting dirt on her and her brothers when it is dry or water on them and when it is wet and since she is black she can't do anything about it. Also she lives on a farm so she has to help pick cotten. Then there are mean white people called the night men who beat up her friend T.J. then right before they killed T.J. her father set the cotten field on fire so they went to the cotten field so it would not burn down the forest.
