Yes, I haven't read this series before. Did I love it? Not completely. Was it seriously entertaining? Yes sir!

I
know people gush about Patterson all the time, but his writing is only
so-so. The constant action, funny comments, and interesting characters
kept me interested. I was surprised by the short chapters - one for
each audio track! I half-listened and then half-read the book. The
narrators were okay, but nothing I'd probably listen to again.

It
was a quick read, full of action, and very very entertaining. It wasn't
a book I'd ever buy because I love it, but I'll probably continue on
with the series. The book read like an action movie, so I'll be picking
those books up after I read some slower, more flowery novels.

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson is a great book! Its an awesome way to start off a series. Ill try not to give any spoilers so here goes: this book is about a girl named Max and her "flock"; Fang, Iggy, Gazzy and Angel. They are being hunted down by scientists because they have wings and were part of an experiment but escaped. Now 6 year old Angel is kidnapped by them and now its up to the flock to find her and save her before its too late. This book is full of adventure, suspense and even a little romance between Max and her best friend Fang. In this thrilling first book of a series, Max and the rest of the flock must find Angel and at the same time firgure out where they belong and where they came from. The book isn't just about saving Angel, it goes beyond that which makes the story line even better. This is a must read! :)

I know that everybody says to not judge a book by its cover, but let me be honest here; I am a huge judger of covers. Despite rave reviews, Ive been avoiding James Pattersons Maximum Ride series simply because the cover of the first book looks like an advertisement for a bad action film. You know the ones that advertise themselves as an action film with a female lead but its really more like soft porn in a leather bra? Yeah. It just didnt look like anything that I would get remotely into. What made me actually buy the book? I honestly have no clue. I went to Starbucks, bought hot chocolate (no more caffeine after eight) and walked into Borders with a gift card in hand. Somehow, I ended up walking out to the parking lot with the first two Maximum Ride novels. It may have been the hot chocolate, but I think it was divine intervention.

This book was just the kind of thing I needed after reading some really bad young adult books. Maximum Ride is the story of a group of six kids ranging in age from seven to fourteen who were raised in a lab that they called the School. Four years prior to the story, they were rescued by a scientist who took pity on them and helped them escape. He raised them in the country for two years until he disappeared. The kids grow up learning how to take care of themselves, but they all look towards the oldest, Max, as their leader. When little Angel is stolen by the Schools mutant trackers, the kids go out to save the missing member of their group and get caught up in a dangerous game of cat and mouse that leads them all over the world searching for information about themselves. Oh yeah, and one more thing. Every single one of these kids can fly.

The concept in and of itself is mediocre at best. Winged science experiments on the run are really not that much of a story. But the execution of this novel is truly spectacular. Patterson kept me at the edge of my seat with his constant whirlwind of activity. There was never a dull moment, the moment they resolved an issue, another would pop up and they were off in a flurry of feathers. The plot didnt do much in the way of plot twists and subplots, and while it would have seemed simplistic and boring in any other book, it made this story that much more raw and energetic. I hardly had time to breathe between chapters.

Now, I know what youre thinking; Kathleen, with a plot so action packed and wonderful, how can there be any character development? Well Im glad you asked. Patterson wrote most of the book from the point of view of Max, our main character. Unlike most young adult heroines, she didnt flounce around the facts. There was no whining about her situation or altruistic promises that she wasnt going to keep. Her voice was the harsh, honest energy that drove this book forward. The way she narrates is so perfectly written that you can almost hear her voice as you read. She tells the story in a sarcastic tone that shows her strength and dedication to the flock. When shes mad, she says it, when shes hurt, you know, flat out. Theres no beating around the bush or woe is me. Its a fact and as soon as she faces up to it shes moved on. Its books like this that makes me wish I could sit down and talk to fictional characters face to face.

But enough about Max, each and every character is unique and strong and wonderful in their own way. I could break down all of them but I really think Ive raved about this book for way to long so Ill just leave you with a few more things.

This book is a must read for you. Yes, you. My adrenaline is still pounding from the last few pages and I cant wait to start the next one. From cover to cover this book is heart pounding adventure, stubborn loyalty, and theres even a sexy emo mutant boy thrown in for a bargain price& No, you dont actually get to take home a sexy emo mutant boy, hes in the book.

OMG, OMG, OMG!!! I can't believe it! It's been so long,
so OMG long since I've read a book like this. Lately, books have been
boring me to OMG DEATH and it was so OMG sad and boring that life was
just not as OMG interesting. But, within hours, I sped through the book
with love. SNAP. The first thing, wow, action. I'm not very interested
in sci-fi, actually, but this was half-so, I suppose, and it was so OMG
awesome. Hybrids, wings, oh, it was so OMG amazing and I just don't
know how I'll feel when I finish the series and am tears that there'll
be no more. It just won't be right. =[ I noticed the most awesome-est
things, like, the extensive and descriptive vocabulary for a start, and
the bond within the characters, it was just so... OMG AWESOME. The
whole plot and point of this book was to save Angel, the mind-reading
little-sister-like youngest person of the Flock, who Max is basically
the leader of. I loved Max's qualities and she was just so amazing. All
the characters were. They had these amazing abilities and different
personalities that just made the Flock OMG AMAZING to live reading
with. I haven't felt so good reading a book in OMG AGES. Like, totally.
After finally escaping the School, after two years, they have to return
to save Angel, who is practically being tortured as they experiment on
'it', Subject Number Eleven who can read minds and has
cognitive abilities. OMG, it was just... OMG. Yeah. I felt so... bad
after finishing it and started the second book as fast as... well, as
fast as OMG! I loved the sarcasm, the irony, the OMG Awesomeness in
general. A book of the ages. This book was comparable to, well, Darren
Shan excitement, Artemis Fowl interesting-ness, Eragon-creativity. I
can compare it to anything. I feel so good with the discovery of the
book... It was just so... OMG ADdicting!

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson is an action-packed book about Max and her flock, Fang, Iggy, Gazzy, Nudge, and Angel. Max's flock was genetically enhanced when they were still babies and they're 2% bird. All of them have wings and other bird-like characteristics, making them very unique. Unfortunatly, they live in exile after escaping from the School, the lab that ran tests on them.

When Angel gets kidnapped by the wolfish genetically enhanced humans called Erasers, the flock agrees to rescue her. Leaving Iggy (who's blind) and Gazzy (Angel's biological brother who Max thinks is too young to go after her), Max, Fang, and Nudge venture out to find the little girl, the real danger begins.

Through an intense adventure, Max learns that she and her flock are never going to have their normal and secretive life ever again. They're goal: to save the world.

This book is great for anyone who likes action and adventure. Science fiction fans might also like it because of the genetics that Patterson thinks through well through his writing. This is probably for a teen audience.

This book was great for people who like adventure. It is really a page turner and each book has 300 pages. It is really cool how they can fly and heal very quickly. The 'flock' grows on you. You actually have yourself asking 'what if'? My favorite character is the strong, brave Max (and Angel.) The only part is, flying erasers (destroyers) tend to get into a lot of fights with the flock. Once they end up in the hospital with an injury. The overall message is good vs. evil.

Max isnt your normal teenage girl. That probably has something to do with the fact that she is 2% avian and has wings. And these wings arent just for show. Max can fly. That not enough to intrigue you? Well, there are five more of them, and together, they make up a flock of mutant but cool children.

But the cool ends there. Theyve been betrayed by their protector, someone they thought they could trust. Theyre being pursued by other mutants, part human and part lupine, that they call Erasers. And to top that off, one of their flock has been kidnapped. Now, they must rescue the youngest of their group, Angel.

James Patterson is an amazing storyteller. When I first picked this book up at the suggestion of my dad, I thought that Max was a guy. Then I realized she wasnt because she had a braid. Max has to be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. Shes got smarts and leadership (at least when she doesnt fake it). My other favorite character is Fang, but all the winged kids are awesome and unforgettable.

This series is one of my favorite books, and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Anyone who picks up this book will find something they like in it.
