An unuseful present from his mom turns out to be very useful. Hatchet is a book of survival, strength, and bravery. I loved this book! It was very interesting to see what Brian would do next in order to survive. It was just one surprise after another. I really enjoyed reading this book. Brian's adventure turns from scary to not all that bad. The book Brian is a great book.

Hatchet is a great story of survival. The main character Brain is alone and stranded in the woods and doesn't know where he is. After surviving a plane crash Brian must fend for himself in the woods. He must learn to make and sustain a fire as well as learning how to capture, hunt and protect himself from animals. This will not be easy when Brian must go through problems such as trying to make weapons and getting through sickness. He also learns to make shelter. I reccomend this as a great survival book.

Brian is riding in a plane when the pilot has a heart attack. Brian flys the plane until he sees a lake; then he tries to land the plane. He ends up in the lake and swims up to shore. He finds a place for a shelter and makes one after he discovers he still has his hatchet. He finds berries to eat and finally perfected his fishing arrow. Later there is a tornado and part of the plane is sticking out of the water. He makes a raft and gets out to the plane, and after several tries he gets the emergancy kit. He gets an emergancy transmitter and turns it on, but nothing happens. He leaves it on and a passing plane gets it.The plane comes and rescues him.

I think if someone read this book and wanted to read more like it they should read Big Red, Irish Red, and Where the Red Fern Grows.

I loved this book because the autor clearly explains things an events so they can be easily understood. I liked how the author, Gary Paulson, really showed Brians personallity.

If you like wilderness books I reccomend this book for you.

Hatchet is a very good story and i would recomend it too anybody from fourth grade to one hundred years old. Its a classic story about a young adult (ya)who gets stranded somewhere in Canada. Boring at parts but mostly exciting and unpredictable. It also has 2 endings to think of. CW

This book is about a boy who is dealing with his parents' recent divorce. He is put on a small plane travelling to the northern Canadian wilderness to start his first visitation with his dad since the divorce. The pilot suddenly has a heart attack and dies while flying the plane. The plane crashes in the middle of nowhere, way off course, in the middle of a lake. The boy narrowly escapes. The rest of the book describes this boy's attempts to survive this wilderness with nothing but a small hatchett his mother had given him as a going away present.

This book is interesting, but the pacing is a little slow for my taste. It really felt like the whole book dragged on and on. Of course, that's probably how the boy felt stranded in the wilderness.

I think this book would definately appeal to many children, especially boys aged 8-12.

i totally agree with you carmen. this was and still is a VERY BORING book. we had to read it for my reading class in school and i totally hated it. practically everyone else said they loved it but i didnt. it bored me to death. its about a guy whose parents are divoreced so get gets one a "one engine" plane with only "one" pilot and he is the "only" passenger. then the pilot gets a hearth-attck and the plane crashes. THE END. then it talks about how he survives all caouse of the hatchet his mom gave in before he left. wow, what a great book. i feel so sorry for brain.(that's the kid's name by the way)the only thing that i like about this book was that it was based on a real life event that happened to the author gary paulson. the book was basically about survivile skills and if i wanted to read about survivile skills i'd read the island series which is more interesting that hatchet by the way.(i read the first book)

Okay...They made me read it in school, so that kinda tells you that it is more of a boring book than a thrilling adventure...no offense to you teachers out there, but, what were you thinking!!!???
Read it if you want, but I don't recomend it.

this has got to be the most boring book ever. really I never got past page 40 or somwhere close to that effect. It seemed pointless and for me I read it when I was sleepy to really put me in the sleep zone.

I love this book. I had to read it for class, but it was the opposite of boring.

This book combines everything that I am scared of into less that 300 pages! Death, plane crashes, being alone, and mad animals! You read as Brian's plane crashes in the Northern wilderness and he has to fight for survival! Will he live? Die? Be rescued?
