What I liked:
Children are naturally competitive and will jump at the chance to point out what they deem unfair. That happens when Stanley can fly to win a swing jumping contest. Soon, he is questioning his self-worth and whether or not his flatness is fair. When children ask something about themselves that is different but can't change, they struggle with being confident in their skin. Stanley's teacher takes this as a learning opportunity and takes their current subject, the scientific method, and uses it to help everyone understand gravity, friction, and how these things affect us. I appreciate the author using such a great example of slides so kids can do slide experiments once they read the book.
Final Verdict:
It is a fantastic chapter book that teaches children about the scientific method and that we are all scientists. Children learn by observing and mimicking what they see. In this second book, Flat Stanely and his class will use the scientific method to determine if, by being Flat Stanley in a way, they can cheat at competitions, or at least that is where they start. The teacher guides them through boiling their hypothesis to much smaller questions, making it easier to do experiments to determine a well-thought-out conclusion.
