But zero was caught.THIS BOOK IS A THRILLER FROM BEGINNING TO END.

I read this book in third grade, before the movie came out. The book is really good. It's about this boy named Stanley Yelnats, who was forced to go to a "camp" because he was convicted of stealing a pair of shoes that were donated to charity by a celebrity. Stanley didn't take the shoes, and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, but by going to camp he is able to learn more about his family's history and past. He also learns about 'Kissing Kate Barlow', and why digging holes builds character.

As I said, it's really good. The book is meant for all ages. No matter if you're 10 or 20. The story is unique and genuine and worth the time to read it. The author is descriptive and by the end of the book it will feel like you, as the reader, personally knows Zero and Stanley.

My teacher made us read this in 6th grade Reading class. I myself thought it was going to be some boring guy book but boy was I wrong.

I liked the flashbacks back to Kate. She is a great charactor even now, one of my favs.

I liked Zero too, he was cool. I never would have thought he was that old lady's grandkid. That is what surprised me the most, and the onion thing too.

I loved the movie, just as much as the book.

"Holes" is packes full of great young men that you can't help but like. These guys are not the typical "boys next door." They are boys who have gotten themselves in some form of trouble and have been sentenced to a work camp.
The guys work hard, overcome a ton of obstacles, and end up solving a VERY long family curse.
Though this certainly isn't the greatest mystery ever, it is a great book and I think all young adults will enjoy it!

A boy accused of stealing shoes, a pig-stealing ancestor, a dried up lake, and a treasure-hungry warden come together in this amazing book.

Holes is one of the most brilliant YA novels ever written. Sachar juggles several seemingly unrelated plots, but joins them all together and ties up all the loose ends in a satisfying way at the end. When I taught this book, my students always BEGGED to read "just one more chapter." If you know middle-schoolers, you know that is extremely rare!

Stanley Yelnats is being charged for a crime he didnt commit. And its all because of the bad luck that his family has had for generations, tracing back to his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-father. Now he is being sent to Camp Green Lake, a boys detention camp, where he will have to dig holes, five feet deep and wide, as punishment.

But soon, Stanley finds out that theres more going on than just character building from digging all those holes. The Warden is looking for someone; she even rewards every boy who discovers anything of interest to her. Surprisingly, its all connected back to Stanleys great grandfather, and some lost treasure.

When Stanleys best friend from the camp Zero runs away, Stanley does what any best friend would do: he follows after. Of course, running away is harder than it sounds, because the Warden and Mr. Sir cant let any of the boys escape. Stanley and Zero take refuge in the mountains, and later on, Stanley unknowingly breaks the curse that was set upon his family years ago by his great-grandfather.

Holes was an amazing story, and I greatly enjoyed reading it. I especially liked the connections and flashbacks to past events previous to Stanleys story. The plot was very creative, and there are a lot of lessons to be learned about friendship and doing the right thing. I recommend this book for all kids of middle school.

Amazing! I love this book. I've read it 20 million times over. I first read it when i was in grade 5 or 6 and then recommended it to all my friends. The premises of the book seems odd at first a boy Stanley Yelnats is sent to a prison/work camp for "stealing" shoes. Every day every person at the camp has to dig a square hole the size of their shovel. If they find something they must report it to the people in charge.
It's an amazing book and throws several surprises at the reader.

When Stanley Yelnats gets hit in the head with a pair of very expensive shoes he doesn't know what to think. His family has never had alot of money so for these shoe to just magically appear seemed to good to be true. But when Stanley hears police sirens going off he begins to get scared. The cops all of a sudden start yelling at him claiming that he stole the shoes from a nearby orphanage. They made him go to court where he was givin a choice of jail or Camp Green Lake. A little obvious on what he choosed.

When he arrives Mr. Sir informs him that everyone has to dig a 5 ft. deep hole by 5 ft. everyday. And that it builds charactor. Sounds a little crazy to me.

"D" tent is where Stanley ends up staying. The guys there push him around in the begining but they all eventually become friends. Zero ends up being Stanleys best friend which is kind off interesting. You have to read the book to find out what I mean.

Can you imagine digging a hole 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep under the hot burning sun cuz you did a crime and have been told to that digging holes builds good character? Well I can't. I loved this book because the characters just keep on digging holes and give the warden every valuable thing they find. The kids also give themselves funny nicknames based on their own personalities. Camp Green Lake is like a desert, it is dry and hot. Stanley Yelnats, the main character, has extremely bad luck and blames his bad luck on his good for nothing dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather.
What does the warden want the kids to find? Why are they digging holes? Is Stanley's bad luck ever going top end? Read the book and find out.
This book is very interesting and readers of all ages will enjoy it.
