Ray is a seer who can only see the present, exactly as it is, and wonders if the Council is the best place for her talents. Laurie works at his aunt’s magical bakery and dreams of being a famous musician. When a romance blooms between them, neither will be able to predict where their dreams will take them and if their roads will be together.

3 Reasons to Read CRUMBS:

The slice-of-life fantasy premise: I love a story with magic that isn’t *about* magic. While there are flying brooms, sorcery, and seers of all sorts, the heart of this story is the relationship between Ray and Laurie. Ray is involved in big magical activities as she decides if the Council is where she wants to be, but the conflict isn’t about whether her magic can overcome a scary antagonist. Instead, the conflict for both Ray and Laurie is largely with themselves.

The design: CRUMBS nails the cute witchy aesthetic. From the pastry detailing to the ‘spirits’ in their communication devices to the Council uniforms, there is a softness to the illustration that feels like a warm hug in the middle of fall.

The balance of romance and dreams of a career: Both Laurie and Ray have big dreams, even if Ray’s dream isn’t completely defined yet. They have immense passion and believe in their purposes in life, and this story explores the reality of falling in love in the middle of seeking your desired career path. It questions timing, personal growth, connection, and more.

CRUMBS is a cute slice-of-life fantasy graphic novel that doesn’t shy from hard questions about love and dreams.
