My Middle Grade Rereads
by Stacy Hackney

I was an avid reader when I was twelve. I would check out books from the school library on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. When I found a book that I especially loved, I would reread it over and over. While dealing with the tumult and drama of middle school, I found it comforting to return to a favorite book, almost like I was revisiting an old friend who never judged me. Some of my favorite middle grade rereads are books I adored as a middle schooler, and some are books I dis-covered as an adult. When life is going sideways, whether you’re twelve or much older, it’s nice to have the comfort of a book that feels like home at your side.

Here are my favorite middle grade rereads:

1) The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley.
I love the strong and flawed main character, the fantastical world, the quest to save a king-dom, and of course, a girl fighting dragons. It’s exciting, thrilling, and even a bit romantic. This is the perfect world to get lost in.

2) A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
The struggle against darkness, the fear of being different, the time travel, the fascinating  characters, and the awkward and loyal Meg Murry—these elements all combine to create the most enthralling and unusual adventure. This book cemented my love for science fiction.

3) Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly
Erin Entrada Kelly is an absolute treasure in middle grade fiction and all her books are wonderful, but this one is my favorite. The themes of friendship, acceptance, and courage, along with the humanization and distinct voices of all the characters is simply remarkable.

4) Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
This book is a gift to any reader; it uses beautiful language to capture the essence of child-hood. I will revisit some of these poems over and over, marveling at the images and the feelings they invoke. It is both a social commentary and a family story, and emphasizes the power of words.

5) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Set in a graveyard, this book is equal parts scary and odd and heartwarming and creative. I read it to all four of my children at three different times. The ending message of the book—about growing up and leaving “no path untaken”—brings me to tears every time.

Little Women gets a Nevermoor twist in this bewitching novel about a young girl tasked to break a centuries-old curse or risk losing her beloved sisters.

Twelve-year-old Marigold Lafleur is the last of a long line of aromages: witches who blend scents into practical charms using aromagic. But ever since a terrible accident injured her father and damaged Luna Island, Marigold and her sisters, Birdie and Lou, have vowed to abandon their family legacy and mama’s way of life. Shunned by their neighbors and overlooked by their parents, Marigold relies on her big sisters above all else.

But when Marigold discovers a secret curse that threatens her family, her sisters can’t stop the impending danger. It’s up to Marigold and her best friend, Sam, to uncover the origins of the curse and break the spell. To do so, she must learn to trust her instincts and believe in her own unique magic or risk losing her beloved sisters forever.
