Hi, YABCers!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for BREAKFAST WITH NERUDA by Laura Moe, releasing May 16, 2016 from Merit Press. Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from Laura:

Welcome YABC readers. I am delighted to pull back the curtain and unveil the cover of my upcoming novel, BREAKFAST WITH NERUDA. My cover is beautiful because its surface resembles the ocean, infinite and translucent, yet underneath that calm exterior are secrets and treachery. Like the sea, the cover reflects shades of blue and green, ever changing, a trick of the eye, immense and small and boundless. It’s a sad song with a beacon of light. It’s a mystery solved in the ebb and flow of life, digging at its roots.

About the Book

Everyone knows Michael Flynn was expelled, and community service is the only way he can stay out of jail. What no one knows-except Michael’s family-is that his mother is a hoarder who lives in unspeakable filth, and Michael has escaped. He’s living in a 1982 Ford LTD station wagon he calls the Blue Whale. When Shelly Miller, a girl also working off community service, catches him sleeping in the Whale one morning, Michael’s secret is out, but to someone who really gets it. She also gets his anguish that Michael’s mother refuses to tell him who his real father is. Michael seems doomed to stay on the edges of life, but not if Shelly has anything to say about it. She sets out not only to find the key to his father’s identity, but they key to Michael’s heart. If he can stop himself from shutting her out, Michael might have just one chance to really use his strong mind and his big heart. Trust is a big risk. Will he let Shelly in before it’s too late?

b2ap3_thumbnail_Laura-Moe-Headshot.jpgAbout the Author

I was raised on the run with a family who changed addresses with the frequency of fugitives. Because we moved so much, books became my most stable friends. When we lived overseas where there was no English TV. What saved me was the book wallah: a man on a bicycle with a basketful of books who visited our house on Saturday mornings to sell us his wares. We bought everything in his basket, and I often read things that were hugely inappropriate for a young teenage girl, such as Harold Robbins novels, but I also devoured MAD magazine. Naturally my love of reading led me to a career as a librarian and English teacher.

The cover is really simple, which I like! I also like how the story involves trust, which isn’t that common in YA books.

I understand what the author is trying to say about the cover and the sea and the cover is beautiful, but doesn’t hint at all that this book contains such pain and obstacles to overcome for the characters. The synopsis, however, makes me want to read this book.
