Really Bird wakes up to find it is still dark. What can he and his friends do to send the moon to bed and call on the sun to rise?
Meet Really Bird, a small bird who lives in a large city park with his friends, Cat, Rabbit, and Pup. In each story, Really Bird finds himself really wanting something – to be bigger, to have his fair share, or to be a leader – to be really silly, funny, strong, cool, happy or brave. And when he feels something, he really feels it.
Each story is an entertaining, character-driven caper based on relatable social/emotional themes, delivered with surprise twists, high drama, and expert comic timing. Along the way, lessons are learned about qualities such as teamwork and compassion. The emphasis is on character growth and development through creative problem solving, Friendship and emotional engagement are at the heart of every story.
In Really Bird, Really Scared! Really Bird wakes up to find it is still dark and he starts to worry the sun won't rise. Eventually, of course, with some group effort and protesting, the sun rises but that is not the end of the story, as Really Bird and his friends have to deal with changes in the weather. The end of the day provides a colorful ending and then night returns. But now, Really Bird's fears are lessened and his anxiety is under control.

REALLY BIRD, REALLY SCARED is a new early graphic novel story about Really Bird on a day when he felt really scared. Really Bird wakes up one day, but the sun hasn't risen. The moon is getting a bit anxious, as are Really Bird's friends who miss the sun. Even though they are really scared about what is happening, they go to see the sun and tell it to rise. Once they explain why they need it, the sun does rise. The friends then go for a boating trip that ends with rain. After they get home, the rain stops, and they enjoy a rainbow.

What I loved: This is a great early graphic novel that helps budding independent readers to learn how to read this format. There are only a few panels on each page spread with colored bubbles that correspond to the person talking. The speech bubbles are also clearly connected, so it is fairly easy for little ones to follow along. The text uses short sentences and simple words to help budding readers explore this independently. Most of the pages are brief, which really aids children in feeling accomplished. The illustrations are cartoonish and quite fun to visually explore with plenty of color.

The backmatter includes some helpful things to talk about and do to create further conversation and discussion. This would work well for setting the tone and bringing up some key topics, such as about the protest the friends do to get the sun back.

What left me wanting more: While the characters speak about being scared, the emotions did not fully come across in the story, and the plot did not fully lend itself to these emotions. The story also felt a bit disjointed in places with the sun plot and then the rainy boat experience that did not quite feel cohesive or make clear the connections. As a small thing, each chapter also began with a long section of text that set it up, and this could be a bit tougher for early readers to go through, although they use the same simple style as the speech bubbles.

Final verdict: Overall, REALLY BIRD, REALLY SCARED is an interesting early graphic novel that will appeal to independent readers who are getting into this format.
