What I liked:
Our characters all want to be something beyond what fate or destiny sees them as being. Merlynda is the heir to Melyn's legacy but can't use her magic without destroying something or someone. Neci's family are root vegetable farmers, and she is determined to be a knight. Batu is from a raiding family who ran away to be a wandering minstrel. What a collection of characters determined to prove they are not quite what life has deemed them to be. Merlynda is determined to rescue her brother, who is sucked into a portal when her familiar arrives. What unfolds is an adventurous story about saving your family, trying to achieve your goals, and trusting that it will work out if you keep working with those you are around.
Final Verdict:
A great fantasy story that's fun and lighthearted, with a splash of danger that keeps the reader turning the page. The story uses the legend of Merlin as a stepping stone, but after that, the entire world is its own. New places, characters, and dangers mean the reader won't know what is coming next. The Hunt for the Hollower is a great book to read to or with your kids, but readers of any age can enjoy the adventures of Merlynda and her companions.
