This story takes place In 1937, during the Depression, Mary Alice, is scared about leaving Chicago to spend a year with her fearsome, larger-than-life grandmother in rural Illinois, she gradually begins to better understand and admire her grandmother's unusual qualities.

This was a great book I have read it more the ten times I'm sure that everyone will love this book!

During the depression, Mary Alice is sent to a rural area in Illinois to live with her grandmother for a year—perhaps longer. Her grandmother is a warm-hearted, generous woman, even though she sometimes seems slightly weird. Adjusting to a smaller community and school is tough at times, but Mary soon starts to enjoy her grandmother’s company, and the two work together to do good for the community in various ways. Mary Alice’s grandmother helps her though her problems in some unusual ways, but it will be a year to remember for Mary Alice when she goes home!

this book was so good and funny at times....... my favorite part was when the grandma slung the brudicts boots over her horse and the horse ran away. i loved reading this book i could read it all the time!! I would recomend this for 10 to 14 year olds because it is an easier book. I read this book not only just to read it but i had to do a project which was really fun. Over all a year down yonder is a great book to read!!!!! :) :)

After reading it, it reminds me of Anne of Green Gables, but I didn't like it as much, especially since it took me sometime to adjust to the style. It is pretty funny, but it really did seem more like diary entries than a story with a climax or problem. I would recommend it to those who love ancetodes (sp.), and those alone.

I would recommend this book for kids, but I did not enjoy it myself
Good Points
This is the sequel to A Long Way from Chicago, but it can definitely stand alone as I have not read the first book. I think it is definitely a book that the intended audience would love. Kids will love the funny stories throughout the book!
